It's Here! The First 4D Movie Theater in the US, That Is

Mar 26 2014 - 3:56pm

Get ready for a totally new meaning of "going to the movies" because your theater experience is about to get crazy. 4D crazy.

This week, a South Korean-based 4D movie business (CJ 4DPlex) announced that it partnered with a US entertainment company (AEG) to open its first 4D theater [1] in the US. What we know so far is that the 100-seat theater will live in Los Angeles and should be completed in late June or early July.

The crazy part is this: the technology, called 4DX, features wind, strobe, fog, rain, mist, and scent-based effects (!), plus moving seats that match all the onscreen action.

This will be the first major 4D theater in the US, although the CJ Group boasts locations all over the world, such as Japan, Poland, Taiwan, Chile, and Columbia. The company originally debuted with a 4D screening of Avatar in 2010 (imagine that viewing) and more recently had showings for films like Gravity, Frozen, and Iron Man 3.

Just like you'd guess, if this theater is successful, more of 'em will follow. We've already seen versions of 4D theaters at theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios [2] and attractions like Madame Tussauds [3], but this would be the country's first 4D megaplex theater.

No word yet on how much these movie tickets would cost, but we have a feeling they'll be worth it just to say you saw a movie with mist blowing in your face.
