Apple Celebrates Chinese New Year With a Very Touching Ad

Feb 6 2015 - 6:35am

Ready to feel warm fuzzies? In celebration of Lunar New Year, Apple has released its first TV ad targeted at a Chinese audience, "The Old Record," and it's (not surprisingly) extremely touching. It's a beautiful follow-up to this FaceTime calligraphy ad [1], which was released online in 2010. What's surprising about the new spot is that it's a very close reproduction of the tear-jerking American version [2] called "The Song," which ran during the holidays. In both spots, two granddaughters rerecord songs originally sung by their grandmothers and present the new track as personal gifts. It's proof that family love is universal, no matter how different cultures around the world may be.

The Oscar-nominated Chinese director Ann Hui On Wah filmed "The Old Record." It's quiet, understated, and, quite frankly, might even be better than the original. Watch and decide for yourself!

For the first time, Apple released the new iPhone 6 in China just a few weeks after the US release. Despite the iPhone's availability, smuggling is still rampant — this man was caught with 94 iPhones strapped to his body [3] at the China border. It's no secret that Apple is setting its sight on international markets, where rival Samsung has traditionally been dominant. In January, Apple reported that it had earned $16.1 billion
in revenue
[4] from China. The company sold 74.5 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2015, over 12 million more than anticipated, thanks, in part, to a boom in Chinese sales.
