Is Apple Introducing an Inexpensive Laptop at Macworld?

The rumors are still swirling, but I think it's safe to say that Apple will be revealing an ultra-portable laptop at Macworld this January. According to CrunchGear, these new sub-notebooks will be super affordable while The Boy Genius Report claims that they will go on sale a week after Macworld. I doubt that it will give the OLPC XO laptop a run for its money, as it will most likely be priced around the $1000 mark. . .Which may be a good thing since it will boast more features and functions than the basic $100 laptop. Stay tuned for further revelations in this story. Source

That is the eMate here's the info I found on it. They no longer make them. The eMate 300 was a personal digital assistant designed, manufactured and sold by Apple Computer to the education market as a low-cost laptop running the Newton operating system. The eMate was introduced March 7, 1997, for US$800 and was discontinued along with the Apple Newton product line and its operating system on February 27, 1998.[1]

I can't wait! Bought a MacBook a few weeks ago and had too many issues; keyboard would stop working and there was a clicking, so I returned it. I need to update my G4 iBook, but want something light and smaller. Somewhere I read the new portable will have flash memory? Wondering how powerful it could possibly be? You know I will be psycho refreshing macrumors during Steve's speech, haha.

I would imagine that it would have a dual 2-2.4GHz processor- since that is what is shipping on all their portables (actually you can get a 2.6GHz on the MBP's now). LJDP- Traditionally portables are always slower than desktops (if you were to take a dual 2GHz desktop vs a portable 2GHz) due to the need to be compact. In your case any of the dual Intel's should be faster than your G5, unless of course you have one of those fancy Quad Core G5's- then it would probably be close. Also consider the apps you are running- if you are running non intel native apps (CS2, Office 2004) on your G5 then they will be much faster there than on an Intel machine. These Intel machines are super snappy when pumped with RAM.

I wonder if it will have the processing power of the current MacBook. If it doesn't work as well as my Desktop G5, it may be a waste of money. I'll wait and see the reviews, but I am in need of a laptop for work.

Teehee. That's a really old Apple. I'm sure anything Apple releases in the future will be metallic like the current line-up (save for the MacBook); they're moving away from plastic.

wow that is hideous, but hooray for cheaper laptops. I am buying a macbook next month though. :)

I believe that's an Apple eMate ;-) That's not a wifi antennae, it's the stylus.
