See What Was Inside Neil Armstrong's Travel Bag to the Moon

Feb 9 2015 - 1:45pm

Man oh man, what a discovery. After Neil Armstrong died in 2012, his widow, Carol, found a white cloth bag in a closet. Turns out, this magical bag was full of items from the epic Apollo 11 mission that journeyed to and from the moon. Known to the astronauts as the McDivitt Purse, it's now on loan [1] to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC for eventual public display. Until then, take a peek at everything inside.

Among the items: a waist tether, utility lights, a mirror, and the camera that captured iconic images from the moon landing, like the planting of the US flag on its soil.

Here is Buzz Aldrin holding the bag 55 hours into the journey to the moon.
