A Caribbean Resort Bans Cell Phones

I sometimes entertain the idea of going on a "gadgetless vacay" — no BlackBerry, no iPod, no iPhone and no laptop. As much as I would love some peace and quiet from my ringing, vibrating and blinking gadgets, I can honestly say that I like being somewhat connected. So when I heard the news that The Grenadines' Palm Island resort had banned the use of mobile phones on one of its beaches, I was totally shocked. Maybe a cell phone free zone, but not allowing guests to use mobiles, laptops or PDAs within a half mile of the resort's beach is a bit over the top. Since when were laptops considered so distractive? I guess if you are looking for an escape from modern technology, this is the place for you. I think I'd be voted off that island in no time. When my husband and I went on my trip to Fiji, we didn't really have any access to the outside world other than asking to use the staff computer to check emails. Our cell phones didn't work over there either. In any case, we were able to really just focus on enjoying our vacation without worrying about work and responsibilities. Anyway, I think that it's a good idea.

I think this is a good idea. Especially to those (like me) who are constantly on your computer. When you go on vacation, you should go on vacation sans gadgets! :)

I would totally go for husband is ALWAYS on his computer and phone for work and I'm on my computer pretty frequently, too. We're going on a much-needed cruise this February, and we're already pledging to each other that we will not be taking laptops even if our ship has wifi access, and phones are staying off, unless we want to play games (which we're both slightly addicted to). It will be a true vacation!

Good idea. Sometimes people act as if they just can't live without them. And they are usually the things that are truly stressing you out.

I think it's a good idea for people who really want/need to get away from being chained to their gadgets, but...I really can't stand extended periods of time without my cell phone/comp/music.

It's not a complete outright ban at the resort. You're just expected to show some courtesy to the people around you. It's just near that one beach. I'm all for it. I can't stand hearing someone on their phone or cursing at their laptop. I've been at many restaurants that request you leave your phone with the cell phone minder and they'll come and get you if you have a call.

It's excellent. But I'm the kind of girl that turns off her phone for a week for no reason, or forgets to charge the iPod for a month.. so it's not hard for me to disconnect. I'm getting married in a place with no cable and no cell phone signal.. not to mention no restaurants or hotels within 45 minutes..

I have mixed opinions about this. I think it's great for workaholics, or for technoholics (*cough cough Geeksugar* :P) to have a place to relax and get sober :P. But I also think it's not that good for people who need to stay connected, like parents who take a vacation without their kids. Personally, everytime I go on vacation, I like to check my emails or calls a few times, and also check my favourite blogs to stay connected. :)

I think is GREAT! If you go on vacation then you go on VACATION! nobody bothering you on your cell and no tech temptations would be great!

This is a *great* idea... sometimes you have to be forced to get away from everything. Think of it as an intervention :) Plus, a lot of people have their bosses calling them on vacation. Going to a place like this means you can let the boss know he's not going to be able to reach you, and there's nothing you can do about it.

considering my cousin and I had to go to the library to get an Internet connection one vacation...I'd say I don't think I'm totally capable of going a long expanse of time without technology...
