Crystal Castles is So Geek Chic

Geeky Tunes: Crystal Castles

I love uncovering hot online music sites like Pandora and Grooveshark that allow us all to discover new music, but I really don't pimp much music itself since I prefer to leave that to the experts on Buzz. But today I thought I should make an exception for some truly geek approved tunes. I was recently turned on to Crystal Castles by a pal, and have been totally smitten ever since.

Straight out of Toronto, Crystal Castles uses hot pixeltronic beats and electronic grooves that make me want to get up and move! Named after the castle from one of my fave childhood TV shows (and it's also a name of an old Atari Game), their first album was released here in the US mid March to solid reviews. Plus the fact that they relied on the wonders of the Internet to climb their way up from the underground make this duo totally geek chic. They have a whole Mario meets electronica vibe that I'm really digging! Check out a few of my fave tracks below called Crime Wave and Courtship Dating and tell me what you think about them when you

Love these guys. Really surprised to see them on this site. They're very video-game electronica. Woohoo.

Aaaah, come here and give me a hug, Geek!! I was just about to post a review of the album in Buzz's group!! I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Glasgow, and they were freaking amazing live, possibly one of the best shows I've seen. Do go and see them if you can, Alice Glass was a brilliant performer (and Bella should cover her look in the Bella Donna section imo). I'm super impressed by the quality of the CD, usually electro bands that are good live turn out boring in studio, but I've been listening to the album non-stop everyday for the last 2 weeks and I'm still not bored of it - it really has the same quality as their live sound. I think they're getting pretty famous among the music-minded people, but I'm so glad to see people here like them too. You should also check out the many remixes they did of bands like the Klaxons. Oh, and my fav song is Alice Practice. :)

Calamari - thanks! Different from 8bitppls chiptunes -- more band-y -- but awesome in its own right. All this talk about chiptunes made me want to go get some from the 8bitppls website, and I just saw this: ". . .we release all our music under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License here at 8bitpeoples. What this means is that you're free to share it however you like, with whomever you like. All we ask in return is that you credit it appropriately, do not use it for any commercial purposes, and obtain permission before creating any derivative works. . . Crystal Castles has violated every term of this license in their use of Lo-Bat's music. Furthermore, they have committed copyright infringement by sampling other artists such as Covox, whose drums from his song Sunday appear in no less than four Crystal Castles songs." Hm. Not cool Crystal Castles!

I heard of them a little while ago. I think they might have been one of the bands I discovered while looking up new music to listen to on Last FM. :)

I don't know much about chiptunes but my boyfriend loves that music. All of the chiptunes forums are up in arms because they say that crystal castle "samples" music from other artists without giving credit (i.e. stealing)just thought I'd throw that out there

This is cool. Thanks very much GeekSugar. You should do a whole feature on geeky music EvilDorkGirl is right. If you like this sound, you should check out some other chiptune artists that use hacked NES and gameboy systems live on stage to create their music. While on the subject of geeky bands, you should also check out The Protomen, they sing about Mega Man and dress up in Mega Man costumes on stage. love 'em

I heart chiptunes big time (that's the name for music that uses old-school video games sounds to create music). I'm SO happy to see a woman involved in a geeky group like this! If you like this stuff, you should check out 8bitpeoples at They have a ton of stuff on creative commons. If I could have a musical baby with Bit Shifter or Nullsleep... mmmm geek music.
