Delia Derbyshire, Creator of Doctor Who Theme Song

Geek We Love: Delia Derbyshire, Doctor Who Composer

Delia Derbyshire, a British musician most active in the 1960s, touted some very strong geek credits to her adorably alliterative name: she's one the creators of the iconic Doctor Who theme song. With musical techniques similar to modern-day foley artists, like using household objects to replicate sounds, Delia created early electronic-style music without the 21st-century trappings of drum machines and GarageBand. It's hard to believe the song that transports viewers into a universe of adventure and time travel was made the analog way.

Listen to the beautifully vintage 1963 version of the theme song below, and don't miss the video of Delia explaining the method to her musical madness in ModCloth's GeekWeek celebration.
