Do You Ever Watch TV With Faraway Friends?

Do You Ever Watch TV Shows With Faraway Friends?

There are times that I'm so engrossed in my technology-filled life that I forget that not everyone has the same geeky habits and quirks that I have. After reading this article about friends watching TV together in different time zones, I had one of those reactions. Call me an early adopter, but I've been doing this since high school, when my then-boyfriend and I used to watch Dawson's Creek together on the phone.

But, like so many other things, technology makes co-watching TV shows even easier, thanks to DVRs and services like Hulu, which allow you easily to watch the same show with a friend from virtually any two locations. Then, add services like Skype, which allow you to talk to friends in real time while you're watching. Not to mention there's no danger of someone else in your house complaining that you're hogging the phone line during your favorite show (or picking it up every five minutes until you promise to hang up).

I love doing this with friends who don't live in my city. Usually, my friends on the East Coast will DVR a show and watch with me when it's live in PST here in California. We'll iChat — sometimes with video, sometimes without — and talk as the show progresses. It's an easy (and fun!) way to feel in touch even when there are thousands of miles between us. Do you ever do this?

I used to do this with one of my friends over the phone, we'd watch The O.C. together and sometimes Paradise Hotel (anyone remember that show?). Now that I have a webcam again, maybe I'll start doing it again but much more 21st century.

Yep! I just watched "Conveyor Belt of Love" with my sister last night! We call each other on commercial breaks.

Me and my roomie watched Precious online together over the break. My exboyfriend and I used to watch EVERYTHING together online because he lived a few states away. I love do this.

My bestie always lived in random faraway places all thru jr high and high school so we were pretty much always on the phone. I know we watched a lot of tv that way but the only things I really remember are laughing together at the turkey-on-the-head Friends episode, and when we both simultaneously saw Ryan Reynolds for the first time (on 2 Guys, A Girl & A Pizza Place) and were like "OMG WHO'S THAT?!" And, of course, every time the Smashing Pumpkins were on an awards show or anything we'd be on the phone for real-time Billy-oogling :D

I used to do this back in the day with Dawson's Creek, too! Of course, my mom would get mad at me for always tying up the phone.

I do this all the time! Either watching shows as they air on TV or on our computers. It's so much fun! Though I've never done a video chat or voice chat, just text chats. I think I prefer it that way.
