Do You Recycle Your Old Cell Phones?

Everyone says they're going green these days, but I often wonder how many people are really making an effort to help out mother nature. A recent study performed by iSupply Corp., found that less than ten percent of people who upgraded their phones recycled their old handsets. Additionally, ten percent of people sporting a new cell just tossed their old ones in the dumpster, which equals about 125 million discarded phones a year!

Needless to say, leaving last season's phone for the garbage man to pick-up is bad for the environment, causing mercury and lead to make its way into groundwater. Find out where to drop off your unwanted phones and then tell me, do you recycle your old cell phones?

I get a new phone every 8 months or so, so fortunately my phones still keep their value. I always keep them in excellent condition and sell them online on eBay. If I did have an old enough phone to recycle, I would donate them to a shelter.

I know that we are talking about recycling cell phones which is great and I did. I noticed at verizon they have a box you can put your old one in or when I got my new one at tmobile they gave me a prepaid envelope to send mine in. I also noticed aimeeb commented on donated old glasses which is important! When you donate them they go to people in need. My family own an eyeglass shop and we send them to other countries where people are unable to afford glasses and they match people up the the prescriptions. So it is very important to donate/recycle your old things instead of throwing them away!!!!!!!

I have them all stored in various boxes and such. I don't think I knew what to do with them. When I move and come across them I will definitely look into donating them. I've got some good hand me downs :-)

I have donated or recycled all my past cell phones since I get a new one every year. Besides some places will pay for your old phones. The donated ones I get to deduct on my taxes too!

I keep my old phones as back up. I just got an iPhone so I doubt I will need a backup but, who knows.

I have had to replace all of my phones because I have either lost them or broke them. Just got a new phone today and have a 2 year old RazR and I am thinking of asking a family friend if she wants it. If she doesn't, I would like to do the petsmart thing :)

my boyfriend's family does that. but my last cell phone broke, and in order to get my free replacement, i have to send it back to the company. i ended up getting a new model because they didn't have mine anymore. the one before that we keep as a back up cell phone. the one before that i gave to my mom, then we gave to the company to recycle.

Petsmart has envelopes that are prepaid -- pick one up, put your phone in it, seal it and drop it in a mailbox! Helps homeless animals!

I've only upgraded my phone once, but I kept my old one just in case. And it was a good thing, too, because a few months later, my brother fell off his bike onto his phone and ruined it, so we switched his number to my old phone, and all was good. :]

my old phones always find their way into someone else's pocket - either a family member or a charity. there's always somewhere that you can donate it because it's just a waste if you toss it out!
