Do You Text Message While Driving?

I was recently reading an article in the The New York Times where a 17-year old girl and four of her friends were killed in a car crash which police say was caused by three factors: her inexperience at the wheel, driving at high speeds and the text messaging that occurred while she was driving. Two minutes before the accident was reported, the driver had sent a message to one of her friends.

We all know the risks of talking on your cell phone while driving, but is texting just as bad? I guess those few seconds you take to look at the message or write a reply can have fatal results. But then again, I often see people eating, doing their make-up and reading newspapers while driving - scary but true!

We know people can be pretty uninhibited when it comes to car behavior, but are you a chronic text messager while driving? If you are, why do you do it? Boredom? A cheap way to chat with friends? Do tell!

No way, I refrain from texting while driving. I drive with full concentration and do not look at my mobile for reading incoming text messages. I use application with my mobile for listening to incoming messages.

What an ignorant thing to do at the wheel. My friend had just gotten his license, and within a week, got into an accident from texting while driving. He's got all kinds of fines to pay, his insurance is messed up now, but at least he got his text message...

i NEVER do it. i don't want to risk messing up my beautiful car or hurting anybody. People who text or talk on the phone while driving swerve onto my lane and that really brings out the road rage in me.

I yell at my boyfriend all the damn time for texting me while he's driving. I mean, cool, he's texting me to tell me that he loves me and misses me, but I'd be so damn pissed if he got in an accident because of it!

Please don't text or read text messeges while driving. Nothing is that urgent to put other peoples or your lives at risk!

I do it all the time, but I'm an excellent and experienced driver and I'm also quite saavy when it comes to texting, if I do say so myself. I think the general rules should be: if you're under 21, or you need to look at your phone when texting, then you probably shouldn't be doing it while driving.

Wow, that's stupid. The amount of time it takes to send one text message, she couldn't just press the speed dial button and call the person? Oh, society. How droll.

It's illegsl in NY (where I live) and NJ (where I work), but I still do it. Not really while driving, but at red lights and in traffic (which there's tons of)

No way! I even pull over if I want to talk on the cell. I hate people who talk on their cell while driving much less texting. I think it all should be band while driving. Just so you know to the ones who do either of those I am the one behind you blowing the horn and cussing you out. :)

Why would anyone do this? I think cell phone use (of any kind) should be banned while driving. You're driving a several-thousand pound vehicle... is there really anything that important that you have to text someone while doing this?

Only at a stoplight that I know is extremely long (or I'm in a long traffic line at said light).

I'll admit it: I do it almost daily. BUT, before I get yelled at, I have a Sidekick, and the QWERTY keyboard is extremely easy to use. I can type out messages so quickly at red lights. On the other hand, I know when to do it and when not to; when I'm on the freeways, the sidekick is in the purse.

Pfft...I cant even talk to the person next to me coherently, much less take my eyes off the road, form a witty text with one hand, and pray the car in from of me didn't brake.
