Douglas Wood iPhone Dock

The iPhone Dock That Really Wants You to Sleep

The 夜間night* charging dock (the Chinese symbols translate to "from dusk to dawn") may appear to be simply an unassuming opportunity to stylishly charge your iPhone, but designer Douglas Wood created the dock with a very specific message: trying to discourage phone use in bed so owners get a better night's sleep.

After the iPhone is placed inside the modern contraption, the hidden connector charges your phone, but it also notifies the dock when email or text message notifications arrive. With no new notifications, the dock has a warm, gentle glow to lull you to sleep, but when an iPhone notification appears, the dock flashes like crazy, upsetting your sweet slumber! Once it's finished throwing a tantrum, you have the opportunity to respond to the message, shut your phone off, or put it in airplane mode, the latter two of which Douglas Wood hopes you'll start doing. And he's not trying to hide it. Interested in how this thing works? Keep reading to check out a video demo of the 夜間night* charging dock.

Okay, that is the crappiest and not helpful video demo.  It is very shaky, very annoying.  It was pretty hard to understand without reading the intro/blog entry.  It would have been more helpful if the frame didn't cut off the top where one could have seen how the phone docks on the thing and how the phone is pulled out.  I had to go to http://mrdouglaswood.wordpress.com/ to see better.
