Is Exergaming The Next Trend in Fitness?

From the Wii weight loss challenge, DDR busting a move in PE classes across the nation to substituting traditional workouts and sex to a little Wii tennis time, the media can't stop talking about whipping the fat video gamer stereotype into a fit and trim calorie-burning-video- game-playing machine.

Even the Associated Press recently got in on the fun, going so far as to call the rise of exercise-focused gaming, "exergaming" Says top video gamer site Kotaku, it "combines the fun of interactive video entertainment and calorie burning." Who doesn't want that?

So how far are we willing to take it? According to Kotaku, "some gyms are integrating dedicated exergaming machines into their circuit of traditional exercise machinery, with some business springing up around the concept of family-based exercise complete with Dance Dance Revolution arcade set ups." Is Exergaming the new cardio striptease, or is someone just trying to seduce us into buying an Xbox? More importantly, will the interest in video game exercising resonate with women, or will husky Turtle types and children be the only ones to benefit?

Maybe I'm ahead or something, DDR has been "in" for quite some time.

Colormesticky, I checked online, and it appears that Nintendo is coming out with a few dancing games (DDR, and Dance Factory, which will also tell you how many calories you burn). It also appears that they are coming out with something called, "Wii Health Pack," which has been described as "a way to get families to exercise together." I guess we'll see where these games go, but my big Wii rule is that I don't sit down to play. It helps limit the time that I'm absorbed into a game (come on, I'm a grown-up, I really can't afford to play a game for hours and hours anymore!) and also keeps me up and moving around.

I love it. Once I got into DDR, I could never go to a gym again, so boring!

I think it's great, and I hope Nintendo comes out with more sports games.

My boss and I have discussed playing wii sports to loose a few pounds -- this could be a really fun trend!

I love the idea for people that need help, but can't seem to find the motivation to run or go to the gym.I personally don't know any gamers who are over weight. All of the ones (10 or so?) I know are average or could gain a few pounds!

Video games typically emulate real sports ("Why play football with my friends, when I can play with this controller!") but DDR and the Wii actually get us off our rears. Heck, even Guitar Hero gets me up and moving (or, up and dancing, if you will). While kids still need more than just video games as exercise, it's definitely a good start in my opinion.

i think is a great idea to loss weight, because it works and it´s fun. some years ago, when this kind of games was released, i buy one for my PSP (i know, it was long time ago :P) and it tell you how many calories do you burn, so i know it works.
