Facebook Edging Out Email as a Way To Keep In Contact With Friends and Family

Do You Use Facebook More Than Email to Stay In Contact?

I'm guessing that since you're reading this site, you're on some sort of social networking site (more specifically Facebook), and probably check a few times a day (or if you're like me, checking it all the time via a mobile app). Facebook, as well as other social networking sites, provide a great way to keep in touch with people. So much so that social networking may be edging out email as a way to keep in touch with friends and family.

Time spent on Facebook is up 88 percent from five years ago, while email usage dropped by 41 percent in the same amount of time. It makes sense — I mean, even grandmas use Facebook! Do you use Facebook or other social networking sites now more than email to stay in contact with friends and family?

Wellll---I used to write on people's walls and private message them a ton, but I deactivated by FB account for the time being (was getting sick of it/am applying to jobs) so I will def. be emailing me. I am not worried about losing contact with my close friends, I am more worried about my acquaintances who I would just say "hello" to--I doubt I will send them an email. And I am most sad about not seeing everyone's pictures :( :(

I always use my email, and whenever I get a notice about something happening on Facebook, I will check it. But I am not on facebook 24/7 like I am with Gmail.

I used to be on Facebook all the time, but I'm bored with it now. I try to use email, but most people still try to contact me over Facebook.

yes, only because no one checks their email anymore and almost all my friends have facebook mobile.

I'd say it's about 60/40, in favour of email. Though some people I find you just have to contact them through facebook or you'll never hear from them.

call me old fashioned, or an 80's kid, but I honestly love regular email. I think it's more personal and thoughtful. I check my email 80 billion times a day (along with facebook), but I use facebook for leaving messages to people I want to say hello too quickly, or otherwise wouldn't talk to if it weren't FOR facebook. I do email frequently though; close friends and family.

I definitely do. I even wrote on my grandmother's wall to wish her a happy 90th birthday instead of emailing OR calling her!

I'm in high school, and most of my friends never check their emails or don't have them at all, so I use facebook for that. I'm also on the school newspaper, and facebook is the best way to get in touch with students who you want to interview, rather than hunting them down in the hallways or trying to get their phone number from someone. The only time I use email is with my teachers or for online ordering.
