Geek Squad Peeping Tom - What's Your Reaction?

Geek Squad Peeping Tom - What's Your Reaction?

I've been avoiding this story for a few days, because it's one of those tales you just don't want to believe. Alas, it's gotten under my skin and I figure you readers will have a thing or two to say about it. A computer technician who works as part of Best Buy's Geek Squad is now facing criminal charges after he was caught using his cellphone to videotape a young woman in the shower.

According to Gina Hughes of Techie Diva, the technician was hired to do some work in the 22-year-old woman's house, and asked to use the bathroom before the she hopped in the shower.

What she didn't realize was that Hao Kuo Chi was cleverly positioning his cellphone behind the sink, allegedly to capture footage of her showering. Fortunately, the woman's sister noticed the phone's red blinking light, removed the phone's chip, and took it to a nearby Verizon store to view its contents. After their worst suspicions were confirmed, the 22-year old says she felt embarrassed and dirty.

The story is petrifying on a number of levels and gives technicians all around a bad name by extension. Of course, one can't say that this incident had anything to do with the fact that the man was a "geek" or computer technician, but simply that he abused technology in a disgusting, illegal and unfair way.

I think we were mostly reacting to the facts we had at hand. And my bigger concern is people that are too comfortable with service technicians. I've actually gone to people's houses to do a repair and they just left the door unlocked with a note to go on in.. What?? People are far too trusting at times. So while most people wouldn't take a shower with a stranger in the house.. if her sister was there she might be more OK with that or in a hurry to get ready for work. I'm not terribly familiar with the type of phone that the article below says they use but my Treo 650's memory card is visible and ejects right out with a light push to it. The truth should come out in the courts (you always hope anyways). With all things on the internet I have no way of verifying that this guy knows what he's talking about, so take it with a grain of salt :-)

Everyone seems quick to jump at this guys throat but looking closer some things don't add up. As he is a technician I would expect that his phone is more than likely going to ring at least once while his is there. If not he may well need to call for technical support himself if he can't fix the problem. How did he know she was going to have a shower and why would she when there's a guest/ stranger? Wouldn't water condense on the camera lens meaning there would be no/little visible footage? How did the girls know where and how to take the memory card out (they did need geek squad after all)? Why take the memory card down to a store and not just watch it on the phone. Why are they suing best buy and not just going after the employee, money by any chance?

It's always sad when geeks use technology for evil instead of good.

what happened to the guy? i hope he was punished. i hate that men seem to think they can just do whatever they want sometimes, especially when it comes to taking advantage of women. gives the other good Geek Squad guys a bad name.

Chills! But it happens in every industry - regardless of his occupation. This stuff happens everywhere.

One of my coworkers was sexually harassed by someone who was installing her carpet. The fact that he was a member of the Geek Squad really has no bearing on this - some people are just perverts and will find a way to do this kind of thing no matter what. I love the gum reenactments photos as well!

once again, I agree with macgirl. It doesn't matter what the guy did for a living, he woulda been pervy anywhere. I also like the chewing gum reenactment photos....much better than the girl who uses her laptop with her legs wide open!!!!! I also think it is a good idea to have someone with you when you have a service technician over. I can only imagine how many psychos get jobs specifically so they can enter unsuspecting womens homes. *shudder*

Good posts, macgirl. I think the fact he was part of the "Geek Squad" is irrelevant. Peeping toms and pervs have always used whatever devices and technology available to them to feed their sicko obsession, whether putting mirrors on their shoes so they can see up skirts, to hidden video cameras, to a peeping hole in the girl's bathroom. Just as we as a society evolve with technology and benefit from all the good stuff (iPods, Sugar websites, smartphones, yadda yadda), there's always been that small percentage of people who will use it to their own demented ends. This shouldn't put people off from calling a "geek" to their home to fix their computer... it just means that there needs to be seriously harsh consequences for people who try to get away with this crap, to discourage others from doing it in the first place.

lol macgirl, the chewing gum didn't even click until you pointed it out. Love it! And lmao at the guy who brought in the gay porn. He probably didn't want to put in the hours and hours to go back online and fill up another hard drive. :ROTFL:

oh, and can we have chewing gum reenactment photos for all stories? That's way better than stock photography ;-)

First of all, that guy was a creep. He could have had any job but he still would have been a creep. And advice to women out there, don't have service people over if you are alone. Invite a friend over, wait for your husband to be home. My husband wanted me to stay home for the dishwasher guy and I said no way. Colormesticky- Maybe it's different because I'm a female technician but I generally don't have time to go through people's computers or really the desire. I had one customer bring in his powerbook with an external drive that he couldn't get to mount. When I finally got it to mount it only had gay porn on it. Tons of it, all neatly organized with very descriptive folder categories ;-) I have had people bring in their machines that are completely dead and unable to turn on. You fix them and you're welcomed with either a booby screensaver or naked chicks on the desktop. It's hard enough to look those people in the face when they come in. I think I just feel bad for them as I'm pretty sure they would have changed that if they knew it was going to have to go in the shop.

Luckily her sister was geek enough to take his chip. Does that mean he never got to see what was recorded? I guess the guy at Verizon did, but still. And on another note, whenever you take your computer in for repairs you totally know the people fixing go looking for porn on your hard drive, right? I guess I'd be a lot less embarassed of someone seeing my naked Brad Pitt pics than me in the shower.

ok in defense of the geel squad....just bc there is one sick'o out there it does not mean that everyone is like that, they do background checks, but that does not rule out the fact that you are a perv....that can happen anywhere, hopefully that guy gets what he deserves, bc its just not right to violate someone's privacy. L!VE !N LOVE ;)

yuck!!! I wonder what kind of background checks they do on those people since they will be going out to people's homes... (not that it would necessarily have done anything in this situation if he didn't have a record)
