Geek Tip: Quickly Deleting Items

Here's a very simple trick from Apple Mac Tips that is sure to save you some time.

If you have a Mac, forget about dragging an item all the way across your desktop to the trash can to delete it.

Here's what you do...Just click on the item you want to get rid of and press both command + delete at the same time to move items to the trash. This is really effective for someone like me who has a super-sized screen. I guess I like to think I'm gaining hours by using this method!

Whoa, I had no idea that this was a foreign concept to some, lol. I was on a PC up until a year ago and always knew shift-delete. But I always try to stay on top of my keyboard shortcuts. It's so much easier than taking your hand off the keys to do some laborious click-click-clicking lol

wow totally didnt know that short cut. Thanks geek!

Even if you use this shortcut to quickly move an item in your trash can , you are still able to recover it out of the trash. Unless you delete items in your trash bin, your item will be stored there..(unless your trash bin automatically empties itself)

I "right click" items to Move to Trash like macgirl suggested earlier :)

HalidLove- I haven't had any luck doing these kind of recoveries since back in the OS 9 days. There are disaster recovery companies that can but they are NOT cheap. Usually starting at around $1800 just to look at your hard drive :-(

So i just had a HUGE problem and I just noticed this!!! It may have happened anywhere from a week ago until now...I accidently deleted a GIANT folder which had many sub folders. I cannot find it anywhere, had no idea how it happened, and am FREAKING OUT. Can this stuff be recovered?? there were a ton a family pictures which I don't currently have anywhere else. I have a mac, powerbook g4 from 2004. Anybody, anybody?

I have to agree with macgirl on this one. You have to be really careful with this. Accidently deleting the entire folder would be death at my job. But still a great tip and thanks macgirl for your tip as well. :)

I have to chime in... be VERY careful with this. I have clients who accidentally delete stuff all the time. They open a folder and look at the file they want to delete and hit command + delete only to discover later that they deleted the whole folder, not just the file inside. I have one customer that we call clicky as he does this often. A few tips.. if you do immediately realize you deleted something you didn't mean to go ahead and hit command + z and it will stick that file right back where it was :-) For those of you who don't trust yourself you can right click documents and folders to tell them to go to the trash. (to right click without a two button mouse hold down the ctrl key while clicking to get those right click options). Thanks for sharing this Geeksugar!!!
