Geek Tip: Try Before You Buy

Still pondering whether you have to, want to, or need to get an iPhone when it is released June 29? Not everyone is willing or able to drop their network provider and jump ship to Cingular right away, and if you do you may find yourself stuck in a two year contract, crossing your fingers that a huge pay out is the only thing holding you back from freedom. (Seriously, cell phone contracts are the worst!)

The fact that the iPhone is only being released from Cingular (now the new AT&T), but the price tag isn't particularly desirable either. The phone will cost $499 for a 4-GB device and $599 for an 8-GB model, even after you sign your life away on the contract.

Well here's a little consolation. Posted on Coolest Gadgets, there's now a site where you can go to try before you buy third party iPhone software. iPhone applications showcases all cool applications you can purchase to pimp out your iPhone. Like mom always said, try before you buy.

I want one, but dang that price is a little steep. Especially considering that I've just recently bought a brand new 30gig iPod video and a nano. And, I don't like AT&T! Why isn't it on Verizon? Darn you Apple for making me want things!! lol

5 years. This cell phone business is getting pretty competitive. This is a really smart move for AT&T. I bet they are giving Apple kickbacks big time. I have heard that Steve Jobs is extremely hard to work with so AT&T must have been the only company willing to Steve anything he wanted. Maybe that's why AT&T's CEO looked so beaten down at Apple's January keynote ;-)

Want one soooo badly, i can't believe Cingular gets it for 5 yrs! That is crazy. I am stuck with Verizon, but I really do love my LG. Still, I am faithful to my mac, would love to have this!

rb24, I was about to say the same thing. I think the iPhone looks awesome, but for $600, I'll wait for a while while Apple works all the kinks out. No gadget is perfect when it first drops.

at&t has exclusivity rights for 5 years, so you won't be seeing it on any other US carrier anytime soon... Also, you don't have to sign a 2 year contract for the iphone, they will also have prepaid plans available for the iphone... And in case you haven't heard, they're closing all at&t stores at 4:30pm on the 29th for 1.5 hours, and reopen again at 6pm, staying open until 10pm... Each store is expected to get 100 to 250 units...

god every time i see iphone i think that it has very good look. i can't wait for it!
True rb24, but I want one so bad. I'm ready to renew my contract! (lol) I guess I'll wait until Apple works the glitches out. :)

it always to wait. New products have kinks and let someone else figure those out for the price Wait some time the kinks get fixed the price drops

The only third party apps that can be developed for the phone are based on Web 2.0 (I'm not a developer, so I don't totally understand this) basically what I get from this is it is based on Safari. This means that for now third party apps are going to be extremely limited on functionality. This is a huge bummer. I get it, Jobs want absolute success in this phone launch. I am hoping some day they open this up for more development. I need my solitaire you know ;-) emisaurusrex- From what they tell us it is exclusive to AT&T for quite awhile. I think it would suck if I made this move to AT&T and six months later I could have gotten it on T-Mobile ;-) (not that I could wait 6 months, but that's just me)

I've a Blackberry Pearl!I like It!

Is it permanently exclusive to Cingular? I want one REALLY badly, but I got a Blackberry Pearl from T-Mobile when they very first came out less than a year ago and I absolutely love it, and I can't see the point of having both. Maybe I'll wait until they're cheaper, on more networks, and have larger memory capacity.

Great idea for a website. I've been riding the fence about this phone for awhile.

Good idea. Does Apple have a hand in this, or are they going to be mad?
