Have Social Networking Sites Become Too Confusing?

Recently, when CrunchGear writer Nicholas Deleon logged into his Facebook account he couldn't believe all the random new distractions on the site. With no warning to users, Facebook did receive a facelift- which included the addition of many new features. Unfortunately for Deleon - and all the rest of us who obsessively log on - there's a slim to nil chance that the site will go back to being stale and predictable like he had originally hoped. Has this happened to you? Are your favorite social networking sites becoming more complex and difficult to use? I guess not every social networking site can be as user-friendly as TeamSugar, but I think some sites have taken it too far.

Glad to see I am not the only geek that thinks there are way TOO many social network sites out there!

I hate the new facebook too. I miss it being just cut and dry and easy to use. I have a myspace account and have only used it to catch up but most of them are on facebook too.

Nope, it is just more time consuming than confusing.

That's why I stick to Team and Xanga. All the others have too many frills.

facebook just became myspace with less ads. Call me an Elitist, but I liked Facebook because it was about colleges, not just cities where you f*king live. Now it has so many graphics that I beginning to hate it. I liked that it was just your basic info and that they didnt allow HTML. But, the internet is a crazy updating world. I keep Facebook and myspace like other sugar users said to stay in touch with people I havent seen in years. It is kind of like an electronic yearbook that keeps updating its pages :)

They are just too many of them. How am I supposed to keep track of all of my accounts and remember to update pictures/location/relationship status on each and every one? It's exhausting!

Facebook's got a bit confusing, but it's not so bad for me yet. I still prefer it over Myspace, that's for sure!

there are just too many of them! I only really use livejournal but have signed up for a few others due to invites etc. but don't really make use of anything else. too confusing and i just don't have the time to spend on all those to make it worthwhile.

Yeah, I remember I started out with livejournal. Piece of cake! Had it for years. Then went to mySpace b/c everyone else decided to move. *sigh* Figures that I had set up a whole thing there and then I had to change. grr...I don't know what I'm doing there...what makes it worse is that if I decide to do something on LiveJournal, I find that it's changed too. So it's a lose-lose situation. :( I wished that equaled win.

I completely agree. I, like others above, have been a part of facebook when it was exclusive to a handful of schools. I loved it because it kept me in touch with friends from high school that had gone off to different colleges. Now it gives me a headache with all the new "application invites" I have whenever I sign on- it's ridiculous! Sugar is the only social networking site that I use on a regular basis.

i do agree site liks facebook and piczo are now becoming a bit more complex with all these new features the sites were fine before but adding to much fun to it is taking out the fun of actually visiting sum1 now than rather chat and send pokes to each other like on facebook. Users have now just joined are even gonna find it hard on how to operate facebook, not that it wasn't hard before* sarcasm.

The biggest problem is ALL the different sites. Variety is nice, but not all your friends are on the same site. And what if you are looking for an old friend? I just can't keep up with all of them. And none of them seem easy for a shouldn't take me several hours to set one up, enter my info, join groups, find friends, and then realize I need to find another site to find other friends.

I am NOT happy with the new facebook. I think that there are too many unnecessary applications. I liked the first facebook setup much better. The addition of the Top Friends was just too Myspace-like.

Facebook HAS become confusing. I recently logged in as well and was bombarded by all these accoutrements which I found unecessary. There's easier ways to keep fondly in contact with one another. Just give me the basics please!

I hate how Facebook has become so commercialized and Myspace-esque.

There are just so many! And although I don't *love* myspace, it's the most mainstream one and a lot of people I know are on it, so I use it to keep up with everyone. But there are so many that even that is'll be like, "I'm on Myspace" and your friend will be like, "Oh, no, I'm on Facebook." So yeah, it's a little bit much sometimes. And speaking of Myspace, why can't I put the Sugar widget on Myspace??? Waahh!

i agree...i think i am going to delete my facebook, havent logged in in months and i dont have time to keep up with it, sugar and myspace. i do like myspace though,,,,ive gotten back in touch with great friends and i love it for that.

I don't like all the Facebook applications either. I wish they would just get rid of them! I too, like Caroline, was a member of Facebook when it *just* started opening up its doors to non-ivy-league colleges, but was still quite exclusive. I'm GLAD it's not exclusive anymore (well, there are still a few places that I'm sure aren't on it yet) but now it's no different than MySpace or Friendster - both which I hate!!!

I just think there are too many out there.

i have the same problem with facebook... i've had fb since its inception, when it was just a few schools back when it was called THE facebook. now it's got all the applications and I'm starting to hate it..

There seems to be a large number of social networking sites. What is really the difference in terms of complexity between them is the amount that one can customize their portfolio. Facebook, traditionally, seems to be very rigid in how you can change your page. They seem to be trying to overcome this problem by opening up their service to third party extensions. Myspace, on the other hand, is more like the wild west, in that you can customize a portfolio to any extent that you want. Often, I find that Myspace portfolios are very confusing because of the strange combinations of colors and music. Perhaps, with the large number of sites available and the large complexity of many of them, it is confusing for a newcomer to online social 'networking' to understand how it works. I can agree that the team-sugar networking is very simple and straight forward. It has the simplicity in design of facebook but with way more elegance.

Really the only social networking site I use is Deviantart, and they always send out notices and news about site updates.
