Have You Ever Had Your iPod or Cell Phone Stolen?

As MP3 players and expensive cell phones become more prevalent we hear countless news stories about the devices getting stolen in gyms, schools, buses and even off people's desks. Heck, "Dateline NBC" even did a "To Catch an i-Jacker" special this year featuring iPod thieves. So how bad is it really? It's hard to tell, but the New York Daily News went so far as to blame iPods for a rise in violent crime recently.

I've never had any expensive devices stolen from me (although I do suspect someone took off with my flash drive!), but I've had a few friends tell me their cell phones or iPods were taken out of their purses while partying or out to dinner.

I just had my Creative Zen Visiom: M 30 GB MP3 stolen in Roseau, Dominica IGA Whitchurch. I forgot to take it out of my backpack when I put my bag in the bag storage there. One of the employees snatched right out of my bag--didn't say a word when he handed my backpack back to me. I am so disappointed and thoroughly angry!

someone broke into our house recently and stole my husband's ipod (with all his design files on it) my PS2 (with my FF12 which had 50 hours on the memory card) my nintendo DS and a Louis Vuitton bowler bag. We've since bought a security alarm. I replaced the DS and now I lock it up while not playing with it. Sad. However, we did meet all our neighbors and have organized a neighborhood watch so at least something good came out of it. And hopefully I'll get a PS3 for my b-day!

Good friend just this Friday. Someone stole my purse, though, with $500 plus a ton of makeup and important stuff in it when I was just twelve.

There was an ipod theft ring at my school last year. Students have this way of rigging their lockers so that they don't have to put in the combination each time they go. Well, this theft ring would notice which students had ipods and follow them to see where their locker was. Then, during class time they would ask to go to the bathroom and instead go back to that locker, easily open it and steal the ipod out. Sad, but true.

I would be totally lost if I lost my cell phone...especially right now given that I haven't backed it up to my computer yet...I had to rebuild my laptop and my software thought that it was already on there and we haven't taken the time to fix it...sort of just waiting to get my new mac book pro. However, someone I know got their ipod stolen...but they sort of asked for it. They left their purse at the table w/the ipod out of it and got up to go somewhere leaving the table unattended.... I wouldn't be as devastated if it were my ipod that got stolen but it would still stink!

About Sharnie's story... Last year, I LOST my cell, I dropped it in a parking lot. A woman found it, called the person I last called to get in contact with me. I got in contact with her, and she met me to give me the phone back. I gave her $40 for being so nice, and when I checked my phone calls, she didnt even use the phone other than to call the last person I called! I was so pleasantly surprised.

no ... and i hope it doesn't happen!! that would suck major to have to buy a new phone and or ipod!!.. but usually if im going out somewhere..i take a small purse and only WHAT I NEED... so that i cant really loose anything.. and as for the phone.. its pretty much always in my hand ... but i do have the tendency to set things down and forget.. so lets hope that doesn't happen anytime soon!! :P

My brother put his ipod in his bag, in his locker at the gym, and when he came back an hour and a half later, his ipod was gone. Can you believe they took it out of his licker?!

It hasn't happened to me but it has happened to my customers! I work for the big bad AT&T. People call in all the time suspending their service because their phone was stolen. I feel so bad for those people, but there is really nothing you can do if it gets stolen except report it to the police and hope for the best. I swear I would kick whoever's ass I found out took any of my things, because I worked hard to buy them.

wow - no, not me. i've actually not gotten anything stolen. my best friend left his cell phone on the plane once and 2 minutes later asked the stewardess to check for it and it was gone, even thogh we were the last passengers off the plane! my mom's camera was stolen when her van was stolen and my best friend left was holding my art supplies case when he didn't take off the bus with him - $200 of newish art supplies gone! i haven't done much art since then as it makes me sad to think of stuff i need to replace. :( my best friend also got his favorite jacket (actually two of them) and his metal fancy binder with school stuff in it stolen from classrooms or elsewhere. i guess he loses a lot of stuff. bother. thats about it for people around me with stolen or lost cells and other stuff (which you didn't ask about!)

i had my purse stolen on valentines day. i lost everything. keys to work, my ipod, phone money everything. i had no id or anything to help me get my id back. it was horrible. but the one thing that saved me was i was able to open my itunes and look up the last ipod that was hooked up to the itunes i was running. i was able to get my ipod back because of this serial that is listed on your ipod ( that you should have registered with apple).granted it took a while to get back.

What? *faints* That is what would happen if any of my gadgets were stolen. Then I would be hunting down the low life that took them. It would not be pretty!

once, when i was bowling with a group of friends, someone stole my phone out of my handbag. i didn't realize it was stolen, so i tried calling my phone a few times. you know, so you could hear the ringer when you're looking for it. anyhow, after calling it several times, i realized that it must have been stolen. anyhow, i went to bed, but couldn't fall asleep. so i decided to call it a bunch more times until..someone picked up! he said that he'd give me back my phone if i met him in this neighborhood. i know..super shady..but i wanted my phone back!! so i woke up my husband and made him take me. when we got there, we called my phone and a guy came out. he refused to give me my phone without a "payment for being so nice & returning my phone". so i paid for my own phone! probably not the smartest thing i ever did.. but at least i got it back!

Yes! Someone stole my whole bag, with my camera, ipod video, nano, cell phone, wallet, speakers for ipod and all kinds of stuff inside! We were going to the beach, so i had packed both ipods so when one diesw I could hook up the other one. Never again!!!!! Arrrgh!! My friend and i kept calling my phone and the person kept picking up and hanging up on us. I could have killed!! :P That was a few months ago. I bought the iphone a day or two after. I knew I wouldn't get my old things back..
