The dirt lingering in your keyboard models itself after that old saying: out of sight, out of mind. While giving your keyboard the deep cleaning it really needs may seem like a daunting task, the process was recently broken down by one helpful Imgur user, who goes by codenamesharp [1] on the site.
The user's step-by-step guide is great in that it uses household items you likely already have. One look at the dirt, crumbs, and grime under the user's keyboard should be enough to leave you running to go clean your own. It's important to note, however, that this technique primarily works for wireless keyboards and the process may vary from keyboard to keyboard.
Look ahead for the handy how-to.
Below, everything you need for the deep cleaning.
You might want to photograph your keyboard to remember where everything goes.
Carefully remove the keys with a flathead screwdriver.
Look out for longer keys that have metal attachments underneath them.
Try not to freak out about the dirt lingering underneath the keys.
For the smaller keys at the top, swap out the screwdriver for a butter knife.
Place all the keys in a container of some sort.
Wash them in warm water and a small amount of liquid bleach.
If you have a handheld vacuum, pass it over the keyboard.
Then pass over certain areas with a toothbrush.
Wrap a microfibre cloth around your screwdriver to dry each segment.
While you're at it, wipe the cable with the microfibre . . .
. . . because it's probably pretty dirty, too.
Don't forget to flip it over and clean any grimy parts on the bottom.
Dry your keys and pop them back in their respective spots.
Congratulations! Your keyboard should be good as new.
