Turns out, Chewbacca can speak actually speak English this entire time and we never knew! Actor Peter Mayhew released behind-the-scenes footage of himself on the set of the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, and get this: he actually delivered all of his lines in English during his performance.

Mayhew's voice was later re-dubbed with the classic grunt sounds, known as the his Shyriiwook language. It's the one we've come to love — even if we couldn't understand him. Check out the fascinating video ahead and prepare to see your favorite Wookiee in a new light.
