5 Hacks to Improve Your Internet Speed — and Your Life

Jul 23 2015 - 4:50am

You know the feeling. You're curled up in bed ready to binge-watch Netflix. But instead of your 10th episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, you're watching an endless stream of buffering. Or, maybe you find yourself cursing your computer every time you have to work from home. The struggle of slow WiFi can make you go slowly insane. Stop waiting for your life to load, and try these five tips.

  1. Reboot the router. You do this with your computer, so do it with your router. Just unplug the back power source on the router. Wait a minute, and then plug it back in. The reboot will help the hardware and software sync up again.
  2. Restart your device. Power cycling your computer or tablet will also improve Internet performance. Install updates while you're at it.
  3. Move your router. Your WiFi signal bounces around your home's walls and rooms in a different pattern, depending on where the router is located. Moving it even a couple inches [1] can change the patterns and improve your signal. It's also better to keep your router at least five to seven feet off the ground.
  4. Avoid interference. Keeping your router near a fish tank (the signal doesn't like water) or the microwave could be slowing you down.
  5. Don't do too much at once. Are family members or roommates FaceTiming, uploading a video to YouTube, playing an online video game, streaming music, and streaming Netflix all at once? Well, guess what? Your speed will suffer. A lot. Limit your heavy Internet lifting to a couple activities at a time. And be sure to check anything that might be hogging bandwidth by running in the background, like cloud backups.
