Everything You Need to Know About Ordering Girl Scout Cookies Online

Every year as tech companies and journalists gather at the Consumer Electronics Show, new gadgets steal the spotlight [1] for their innovation and futuristic abilities. This year, one exhibitor garnered lots of major buzz, but it's one that you know well: the Girl Scouts of the USA.

You may remember that this past December, the 102-year-old organization announced it was going digital [2] with a new way to order Samoas, Thin Mints, and more of the cookies you eat one box at a time. At CES, we got a closer look at the new online system, which everyone alive will want to use as soon as the cookies go on sale in February.

There are two ways to order the cookies digitally. One is via an Android or iOS app where you input your information (credit card number, address, etc.) and have the cookies shipped to you in as fast as three days. You can't download the app, though — the Girl Scout does, which means you must still order from her in person (say, if she comes to your door without cookies on hand). If you want to order from a Girl Scout friend or family member who lives far away, she can send you an email order form from within the app.

The second way to order is via a web page that each girl sets up. She can personalize her page with badges and photos and track her selling goals (get all the details in the video above). Similar to how the app system works, you must know a Girl Scout for her to send you the link. For extra privacy precautions, her parents must grant permission before she can set up her page and only her first name will be displayed on the site.

The majority — not all — of the 112 Girl Scout councils nationwide will participate in the digital cookie program. But the whole point of it extends beyond keeping up with the times. "It's teaching them financial and digital literacy, goal setting, how to manage their money, and so many more skills," said Kelly Parisi, chief communications executive for the Girl Scouts.

At the CES booth in Las Vegas, girls like Alanna (pictured up top) were eager to explain how they planned to use the program and already had plenty of preorders lined up. We'll take this future over creepy robots [3] any day.
