How to Take a Good Internet Dating Picture

Have the Best Dating Photo on the Internet

I really love OKTrends, the official blog of OKCupid. It's scientific, it's detailed, and it borders on useful.

It's used data to help us better pose for photos, and now it's helping us with the technical side of the Internet dating picture.

  • Don't use a flash: The idea that people look better in the dark is as old as candlelight, but the unbearable lightness of the flash ages us. It adds seven years to a dating hopeful, so a 28-year-old who uses a flash is as attractive as a 35-year-old who doesn't.
  • Time them: Pictures taken in the middle of the afternoon and late at night garner the most responses. Why? Nobody knows, but OK Cupid suspects afternoon pictures bask in warm light while late-night photos are bolstered by brazenness . . . and whatever you've been out doing.
  • Use the best camera you can find: Better and more complex cameras lead to more dates. Cameras with interchangeable lenses (digital SLRs) are best, though iPhones aren't bad. In fact, iPhone users have the most sex!

Now craft a date-worthy profile, and you'll be all set.

It's funny that the article says not to use the flash, I think I look YOUNGER when I take pictures with a flash. My lines aren't as visible, the natural light brings them out more.

Some 28 year olds do look 35 and some 35 year olds look 28. Being 28 doesn't automatically make someone more attractive. I've seen plenty of hot men and women 35 and older and plenty of unattractive younger people. To imply that attracitveness is somehow directly linked to age is completely absurd and certainly not a statement of fact as the coment above implies.

I think the comment about 35 year-olds, was not meant to be insulting but rather a comparison of a 28 year-old lookingg 28 and not 35. There is certain lighting, makeup, and scenery all that make for a better profile picture. The comment is no different than saying, cigarette smokers' teeth are not as white as non-smokers. It's not saying that there is anything wrong with a cigarette smoker and their teeth, it simply implies that they are not as white. Relax ladies, stressing out it the real age-maker!

I'm with the others on this one. I found the comment about 35 year olds a little offensive. And really, I'd challenge anyone to pick out the 35 year olds out of a crowd of 28 year olds. They don't look that different.

I also found the comment about 35 year olds a little.... rude.

Well unfortunately it's true that men are more attracted to women who look younger and closer to the beginning of puberty than those further from it. That's purely from a natural selection standpoint, though, and it doesn't reflect the subjective attractions that men hold. I agree that it's a huge assumption that a 28 year-old looks better than a 35 year-old, but I think I get where the trend is coming from.
