Get a Glimpse at Mars in a Whole New Way This Week

May 31 2016 - 12:25pm

Keep your eyes peeled to the night sky this week. Mars is going to be super visible [1] to anyone who looks up, especially on May 30 — but you can still see it after this date.

Mars's close approach [2] to Earth isn't a phenomenon that happens often, as it's the point in its orbit that is closest to Earth. On May 30, the two planets will only be 46.8 million miles apart — the first time they have been this close since 2005. Because the red planet will be so close to Earth, it'll appear very bright in the sky. But it will not be as big as the moon — that's a hoax.

Though Mars will appear brightest and closest on May 30, you can be sure to look anytime from now until June 3 to spot it.

As always, Slooh hosted a live stream [3] from its telescope on May 30. The next time this will happen [4] will be in 2018, when Mars will be even closer at 35.8 million miles.

Don't miss out on catching Mars this week — it's truly something you want to see.
