Ikea New Year's Eve Toasting App

Download of the Day: Ikea Skål! (Cheers!)

While this festive (and free!) app was created by furniture giant Ikea, it has nothing to do with shopping for furniture. Strange as that is, get in the New Year's Eve spirit with the Ikea Skål! app, which simulates pouring and toasting a glass of champagne. Skål translates to "Cheers" in English, which is exactly what this app represents. First, select your champagne class of choice. Then fill it with virtual champagne, wine, beer, or even milk. After filling, the app uses your phone's camera to create a live background image, essentially mimicking how a glass of your favorite festive beverage would look in your hand. If you tap your phone with another user's phone, the app produces a satisfying "clink" and even exchanges names and profile photos with the other user.

Upon "toasting," both phones' cameras take a photo; users are then encouraged to share it via Twitter and Facebook. One slight hiccup: the app is written entirely in Swedish, which makes for some translation fun — though if you ask me, "Fyll dit glas" seems pretty close to being universal. Download the free app from the App Store, and check out a fun video explanation (in English!) after the break.
