It seems like there's no end to different social media sites trying to stay on top of trends — and Instagram is no exception. The company just announced two updates [1] that aim to make the app a source of trending news and topics for users.

The first major update comes to the Explore page, a place some people either accidentally clicked or rarely visited. Now, the Explore page will include trending tags and places, so you can check out what a festival looks like in real time, where to visit next, and much more. It'll only be available in the US to begin with but will come to other countries as it works through any bugs.

We're superexcited about the second update to Instagram, a new search feature that lets you search for people, tags, and places (via geotag) through a top search tab. This finally makes the search feature useful and easier to search across all of Instagram, instead of focusing in on certain users or hashtags.

Both of these updates are available for the iPhone and Android today and you should definitely download it sooner rather than later.
