Internet Jerks Are Turning a Sick Little Girl Into a Meme

Mar 6 2015 - 11:15am

Be it llamas [1] or Kim Kardashian's blond hair [2], the Internet will make a joke out of anything. But in the case of little Mariah Pringle, things went too far. The 2-year-old from Summerville, SC, has a rare disease called Chromosome 2 Duplication Syndrome, which weakens her mental and motor skills. After Mariah's mom, Kyra, posted a birthday picture of the toddler on Facebook, people started turning her into a meme and making fun of her appearance. They compared Mariah's smile to a leprechaun; they imagined how they'd respond if a parent showed them a baby picture that looked like her.

"The things you are saying about my child — she's not a monster, she's not fake, she's real," Kyra told local news station WCBD. "She is here." And although they're hurt, the family is trying its best to ignore the haters, especially since they doesn't know how much time they will have with Mariah. "It's a joy to have her just right now. It's just to the point where we're just enjoying her," Kyra said.
