John Mayer Denies He Googles Himself Every Morning

Have You Ever Googled Yourself?

Or maybe I should ask how often? Yesterday John Mayer denied a rumor about him that claimed he was so ego-obsessed, he Googled himself every morning! He responded to it on his blog by saying that it was, "quite simply, untrue." Oh, now John, no need to be defensive! (There are way worse things you could be accused of doing every morning.)

Surely I'm not the only one who's Googled myself! And more than once. I mean, shouldn't you be aware of what's on the web about you? And isn't it just plain fun? There could be someone with your name doing something hilarious or horrible (side note: when I first started dating my boyfriend, he Googled me to find someone with the same name writing some pretty bad poetry, but he stuck with me, potential bad poetry and all).

So, do tell: Have you Googled yourself? How often? Have you ever been surprised by what you've found?

You have to google yourself. It's very important to know what's out there about yourself. Hopefully it's not too bad!! SM

Seems like an overwhelming yes vote. There's even a documentary about one guy's experience googling himself and seeking out a bunch of other people who share his name.

I had to make sure no one talking smack about me on the net. Seriously, I was curious. I just wanted to see if there was anything about me out there. You never know...

I google myself regularly because I'm a magazine editor and I like knowing what people say about my articles and my magazine. I also have my blog on a Technorati watchlist, but that's just because I'm paranoid. :P

Yup. I want to make sure there isn't incriminating info about me out there. But then I read an article about how you should search yourself on other search engines, too, because different search engines come up with different info. So I yahooed myself and I came to a page with my name, phone number, and address! It was a company that I had ordered from through Amazon and some glitch allowed their records to be seen by anyone. I promptly e-mailed them and they took it off right away.

I have, and a lot of information about me comes up. That's why I don't share too much personal or identifying information/pictures online anymore.

I do every few months, just to make sure that there's nothing about me popping up online. I have a fairly unique name, and so far, when you Google me, I'm the only person with my name that you'll find. I don't Google myself out of over-abundant self-interest, but mostly because I like to keep my name and my personal life off of the internet. As an employer who utilizes MySpace, Facebook, and Google to look up potential employees, I would hate for a potential employer to one day search for me and find something unsavoury.

Yep. I googled myself and found a gal with the same name on a porn site, hilarious. Im actually glad to see I'm not the only one with my name and the same spelling.

Ha-ha I just did and I found out I've been a nurse since 1998 ( when i graduated high school) this is a good way to kill the boredom of work related crap.

YES! I just need to know if there's some freak who made a fake account of me, if there's someone who has the same name as me, if someone talked about me on a website or if I can see all the website I have subscribed. Why should I be ashamed anyways!? It's just curiosity.

Nope, I hadn't until I saw this question; then I thought: what the heck and googled myself. Nothing interesting came up - thankfully.

Yes, and much to my dismay, I share the same first, middle, and last name as a British adult film star so all that comes up are thousands of pages of nekkid pictures of her. Sigh.

Why Google everyday when you can do what I do? I just use RSS to keep tabs on what sort of stuff is popping up in search results for me. Feed your ego with RSS

julibul -- I know, right! Someone was definitely Googling himself to find that info! Very meta.

LOL, Schmange! I google myself and have no shame in admitting it. About 1/5 of the results are me and projects I've done (student films, web/graphics projects, etc) and the rest is mostly "adult entertainment" and dogs and babies.

I had a while ago with m maiden name...and apparently someone with my name is one of the top online dating experts. I hadn't googled my married name of course I did it now. First few hits were actually me on my own site. syako and julie...I wanted to keep my my maiden name as my middle name too, and did so when I changed my SS card info. But then I went to the DMV and they wouldn't let me! So now I have two versions of my own name, and I can't tell you which one is official. ;)
