Learn New Words and Expand Your Vocabulary With Save the Words Website

Geek Tip: Expand Your Vocabulary With a Little Online Help

I've heard that the key to mental longevity is to always keep your mind open to learning new things. One easy way is to adopt a few new words and use them in your daily conversations. Surely you don't want to sit around all day, flipping through a thesaurus, so let me introduce you to Save the Words.

This website is not only cool but pretty funny. Scroll around inside the white box, and words will jump out at you, just begging to be used in your next speech or convo. Click on one that looks interesting, get the definition, and sign up for an optional "pledge" that sends you a reminder to use the word as much as possible every day. It's a fun way to expand your vocab, and create those coveted knowledge wrinkles in your brain!

This is a great find, Geek. I am a teacher, but I am also young, so I am tech savvy. My students email me for questions, I email them about their assignments and reminding them about upcoming things that are due, I even hold study groups via a chatroom. It really gets them going, and I have noticed that the kids who don't usually ask for help or participate in study groups in person always go for the online thing. I am definitely including this website in my next email to them today.

If you're on Twitter, follow #wordoftheday - I've been enjoying trying to find ways to add new words into actual conversation. I recently decided that since I'm not in school, it's time to up how much I learn via entertainment. On top of getting my word of the day, I've been trying to get in more reading time before bed, and I've had Cosmos (Hulu) and history/documentaries (Netflix) on in the background at work. I may not have time/money for school right now but thank god I work a job that allows me to add entertainment into my multitasking. :)
