Microsoft Kinect Motion Controller and Exergaming

Microsoft's Kinect Will Take Exergaming to New Levels

The E3 expo officially kicks off tomorrow, but that hasn't stopped the first round of news from coming out of Southern California. Last night, Microsoft revealed the name of its new motion-sensing control system, which was previously known as Project Natal.

Called Kinect, this system uses motion sensing technology to track and record your movements without using any hardware — essentially, you are the controller.

I'm excited about this new addition for one main reason — exergaming. Nintendo may have started the fitness gaming craze with Wii Fit, but I have a feeling that the Kinect will blow the Wii's exergaming options out of the water. Find out why when you read more.

One of the biggest complaints I hear about exergaming is that it doesn't provide a good, sweat-enduing workout to be effective. I think the Kinect will change all that. Mainly, because it will provide more freedom — it's a camera with sensors that sits atop your TV, tracking your every move. But without the restrictive hardware controllers to hold on to, you'll have more range of motion. Your movements can then be bigger, more pronounced, and you can flow from one workout to the next without pausing to "prep" your next position and figure out the right way to hold your controller. Essentially, this means you can really work up a sweat without worrying if you're soaking your Wiimote, or concerning yourself with any weird leg straps.

More details about the Kinect system are to be revealed this week — like pricing and availability — so stay tuned for more. It's definitely something I'm keeping my eye on!
