This Viral Email From Microsoft Shows Exactly How NOT to Recruit Interns

Jul 10 2016 - 9:30am

In what could have been a very simple email to recruit interns, a Microsoft employee instead decided to have a little fun with the email's jargon and liven it up with of-the-moment slang. What could go wrong, right? Well, everything.

The email has since been shared by the roommate [3] of a prospective intern. "HEY BAE INTERN!" reads its very first line. It then goes on to detail a recruiting event cringingly referred to as "Internpalooza." What might Internpalooza have to offer, you ask? According to the email, "hella noms, lots of dranks, the best beats and just like last year, we're breaking out the Yammer beer pong tables."

The painful message ends with a proclamation in favor of getting "lit" on a Monday night. Oh, Microsoft recruiter, you had us at "bae intern."

The email has since gone viral, which prompted Microsoft to release an actual formal apology. The statement to WinBeta [4] read, "The email was poorly worded and not in keeping with our values as a company. We are looking into how this occurred and will take appropriate steps to address it."
