The Most Used and Abused Passwords On The Net

This list is surprising and shocking at the same time - do people honestly think these passwords are safe to use? They may be easy to remember, but in terms of being secure and difficult to crack- not so much. This list, which appeared in the May 8th edition of PC Magazine shows the 10 most commonly used online passwords, none of which surprised me. Although monkey- Am I too geeky to get this one?

  1. password
  2. 123456
  3. qwerty
  4. abc123
  5. letmein
  6. monkey
  7. myspace1
  8. password1
  9. blink182
  10. (your first name)

some of my passwords were pretty simple back when I started using the internet (anyone remember using Juno for email?) I'm a bit dependent on having firefox save my passwords...but sometimes it doesn't work...

This is where online password managers save the day! They create strong passwords for you, store them in an 'online vault' and log you directly into your accounts. I work for Passpack which as you may be guessing is - an online password manager and we are always trying to get people to realize just how important your passwords (and what they access) really are! Choose and use a password manager- Hope it helps! Louise

Mine are usually the first letters of very obscure quotes, plus numbers & punctuation all jumbled up. Often the quotes are just from a conversation between me & a friend or relative. Totally random.

I don't think its really that hard to come up with a mainly numerical password and throw in a few letters... especially if its connected for example: here's a seven didget password... how old you were when you got your first kiss, then the year you were born, and the first initial of your current or favorite pet... that way its conected to you with things that are easy to remember but not easy for someone else to figure out...

Shhhhh don't tell anyone, but my password to everything is the same as everyone elses... All asterisks! :-D

That's not crazy, I work with passwords every day, and my two biggest problems are people wanting to change their password to "something they can remember" (which means password or enter or letmein, but they cant' :)) or their first name or something.

That's crazy. I know a lot of people that use silly passwords though... like the name of their favorite foods or their boyfriend/girlfriend's name. I guess it's just easier to remember.

Wow, that is surprising. I have to have letters and numbers for my passwords at work and cannot reuse passwords. That's hard to keep up with!!

My old work password was so ridiculous, it had to be a combo of letters, numbers, 1 capital, 1 symbol, and the numbers/letters couldn't be in a sequence!

HAHAHAHAHA! When my husband and I started dating we both were using Blink182 as a password! :rotfl: We didn't know it at first, but found out as things got more serious. That was over 7 years ago! (Of course, neither of us uses it now) but I can't believe it's still popular. I guess because it's letters and numbers.
