The Music Industry Wants Cash For iTunes Song Previews

iTunes without the 30-second song sample/preview? I can't even imagine! Well it could happen, that or we'll have to pay for that little song intro because music publishers are requesting royalties from iTunes for their music song samples. Apple may also get slammed with paying licensing fees to ASCAP and BMI for the downloads of TV shows and films it sells. I don't know about you, but it's those short clips that actually entice me to buy certain songs. I usually listen to the preview to make sure that's the track I want to buy. And if I can't listen to a small snip of it, I'll probably just continue to listen to it on a free-streaming site and refrain from buying it.

They better just refrain from taking away the free music. between the free starbucks music every tuesday and the weekly stuff at the itunes store, that's how i compile my music library lately!

That is ridic! Way to alienate the consumers.

Pardon my language, but that's bulls**t.

I agree with Elfyn!I'm already reluctant to buy music because it's very rare that I like an entire album, but when I have I always previewed it first. If i had to pay to listen to 30 secs of a song (that sometimes turns out not to be as good as i thought anyway)I will just stop buying music and stick to Pandora and the lousy radio!

I was just about to start buying music on iTunes again, now that they've removed the DRM from their songs (There's nothing more annoying than buying music and having to wipe your computer from an unexpected virus-induced meltdown only to find that since you've gone through 5 computers/OS installs forgetting to deauthorize your account that you can no longer listen to hundreds of $ worth of music)... but if they charge for the samples, I'm going to just quit buying music altogether. How are we supposed to know if it's the right song or not without hearing it first!?

Do they want us to buy music legally?

can we say grasping for straws? you can listen to an entire album in most stores before buying the cd but listening to a horrible 30 sec snippet is going to cost? i'm so sick of these jerks. wish all artists would just go indie and let us get our music straight from them!

I would go to another site to listen or youtube. I would not pay to preview a song.

I would buy so fewer songs. I love going into iTunes to their indie section and listening to little snippets of bands I've never heard of and then buying a few songs that I like.

Maybe there's a situation like on the office when Michael is sad because Carol broke up with him he listens to James Blunt's song preview Dwight asks why doesn't he just buy it Michael Replies "I just want a taste"

Makes no damn sense!

I really hope they don't start charging to sample a song. The is completely ridiculous and as Elfyn says, people will switch to obtaining music illegally.

With every greedy move it makes the music industry keeps pushing people towards piracy and other alternatives to obtain their music. It just doesn't make sense. Give people an option to sample music and then buy it at a 'reasonable' price and MOST people will do the right thing. Why can the music industry not figure this out?!?

I completely agree, I would not buy it if I could not preview it, could they be any greedier? You can even preview a CD before buying it, so are we moving backwards?
