Offices to Go Email Free on Fridays?

Wouldn't it be great if you could take an email holiday and not worry about checking 500 new messages when you return to your inbox? According to USA Today, some professionals are declaring email free Fridays by taking a complete break from email.

At chipmaker Intel, 150 engineers have started an anti-email campaign called "Zero Email Fridays." Basically the company is encouraging employees to meet face-to-face, rather than sending IM's or emails to someone five feet away from you. This TGIEFF (thank god it's email free Friday) has already been implemented in U.S. Cellular and Worldwide Fulfillment Services in Alpharetta, Ga. Some people are even going as far as declaring "email bankruptcy" — where they entirely wipe out their inbox! How would you feel about this? I couldn't imagine not taking a break from my email for an entire day, let alone deleting my new messages!

I'd get in huge trouble, since a good chunk of my work is answering email questions, activating accounts when I get email notifications, and I work with a lot of people out of state.

i wish they would ban phone calls on fridays. I hate when the phone rings at work on fridays.

I agree with misslarue. I don't think I would be able to do it, but it would be nice.

I wish, but this could never work for my business...

This idea seems like a nightmare to me. Without email my phone calls would quadruple and I'd get even less done. Long live email. Tsudohnimh

As much as this freaks me out I think it's a good idea. Too many people are way to dependent on emails and them being a reliable form of communication. I don't understand why people always assume that EVERY email or IM they send will always make it to the intended recipient.. or better yet that recipient is sitting there reading them right away. As far as deleting my entire inbox, no way. It is my paper trail and backup. You never know when something will come up and people will forget they approved something.

we did a story about that company for one sweeps period....either november or february. it can work, but sometimes, especially if it's a deadline-type situation....shooting an email or an IM is just more convenient. but my newsroom isn't a multi-floor company, so yelling across the room isn't that big of a deal either.

It seems like a nice idea to think no emails on Fridays but I agree with arienne, doesn't seem like it'd really work out.

I don't think this is practical for most companies. What if you have clients who need to reach you?

Wow I love that idea! That would be so nice - but then again everyone would probably just sue thier phones :P

Email bankruptcy is something I could never consider but an email free day would be a lovely way into the weekend!

Oh my, I'm not sure I'd be able to function...I'd have to put things off until Monday or get them done on Thursday (for work that is - for my personal life, no big deal)

While it's an interesting concept - I really don't think it'd work for most companies. Especially those like mine, where we're fractured across the companies. Getting a hold of people via phone is sometimes impossible, so email's the only way. I do have personal email amnesty days - where I just don't check it on Saturdays, though.

Great idea! I agree.

This seems crazy! I couldn't do it, email is mostly how I interact with people at work.

That's a neat idea. I'd defnitely be up for that if I ever keep getting too much email.
