A Way to Text With 1 Hand Exists, but You're Not Going to Like It

Nov 3 2016 - 3:15pm

Typing on the iPhone keyboard can be a real struggle sometimes, especially if your other hand is holding something else. It's why during every iOS update, people hope that Apple will finally do something about it. Turns out the company did create a secret one-handed keyboard, except you can't use it.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith [1] tweeted a photo of what the one-handed keyboard looks like on Oct. 19. He stated that the keyboard has existed since iOS 8, except you can only access it if you jailbreak your iPhone. The keyboard's existence makes sense considering iOS 8 came out when the bigger iPhone 6 Plus was released, making it harder to type on the iPhone with one hand. Take a look at Troughton-Smith's tweet.

Today's fun hack (been there since at least iOS 8); the iOS keyboard has an unused left/right one-handed mode. Activated by edge-swipe pic.twitter.com/zIk7x7CVmu [2]

If you don't want to jailbreak your iPhone, there is another way to achieve a similar effect. Several keyboard apps, like Gboard from Google [4], will let you swipe to type, which helps a lot if you have a bigger iPhone like 6, 6S, or 7 Plus.
