Rupert Murdoch Announces Wall Street Journal Remains Subscriber Only

Do You Pay to Subscribe to Any Websites?

There are so many reasons I like reading the news on the Internet — it's free, it's up to-the-minute, and it's convenient. I don't even bother with sites that have a paid subscription service to view their content online, because I can usually get that news somewhere else. Sometimes I'm even too lazy to register to view a site.

I was shocked to read that Rupert Murdoch announced that the Wall Street Journal is going to remain a mainly subscription-only site. Many online newspapers (like the New York Times) have stopped the practice. It just feels like this is not the general direction that the Internet is heading, and that they're dragging their feet.

But it makes me curious — do any of you pay to subscribe to websites?

No way I'm paying for news. Maybe for games or other interactive sites (and the'd better be extremely good) but you can get news for free everywhere.

I pay for Consumer Reports. There are a couple of sites that I get a magazine subscription to that allow special access to their site upon proof of subscription. Otherwise, I wouldn't pay.

consumer reports only - it's better than subscribing to the magazine, so i do their site. Other than that, nope.

Remember when People magazine tried to make you have that ridiculous code to view their site...yeah we weren't having that either!

no. like kitkatherine says: my university pays for access to tens of thousands of journals, newspapers etc. but who has time to read any? there are so many magazine subscriptions to magazines that cost up to $150 dollars a year or so but i don't have time to go to the school's library and read any of them. sad.

It would have to be a really REALLY good website for me to pay to view it.

school pays for them! i get some news journals, some online sources, and what not. but when i graduate, no way. i don't use them except for special papers, mostly in english class, which i have no more credits to take of.

I don't think I could pay, there is too much free content out there. Even if I were to find a story worth reading on that site, I am sure I could google it at another news site, or someone with a news blog would have the same exact story posted.
