Say Good-Bye To Cell Phone Driving

Gabbing away on your cell phone while driving can be really dangerous, especially when you're in a busy city or driving at high speeds. I happen to have grown up in a rural area, where there are hardly any cars on the road and everyone drives ridiculously slow, I think I tricked myself into thinking it's okay to drive and talk. The Raw Feed has reported that Highway Safety and Technology has created an automated detection system that will reveal who is talking on their cell phones while driving. Using electronic sensing equipment, this system will act as a cell-phone radar for police. It will be available to U.S. police departments as early as this fall, so beware my cell phone loving friends - including you Brit! As my dad says "hang up and drive!"

Thank God! The majority of people that act like dangerous idiots on the road are talking on their phones. Someone BACKED INTO ME in an EMPTY parking lot because she was too lazy to turn around and use her mirrors while talking on the phone. Cell phones should only be used in cars for emergencies and for directions. I take that back: print out a google map and shut up and drive.

Thank goodness. I am so sick of the many instances someone has almost hit me/run me over/repeatedly stopped for no reason/blocked traffic/changed lanes without looking, almost causing a major accident/other stupid acts when talking on their cell phone. They all also seem to drive huge SUVs and Hummers when doing so. The combination of both is lethal (I am NOT making a negative comment about SUVs or Hummers here, but rather making an observation of my past experiences!)

What about states with no laws against driving on a cell? Can they detect bluetooth?

Yeah, jhuck, I have the same kind of question. What if I'm talking on the phone while my husband is driving?

HAhaha - GOOD. Finally people will concentrate on the road. People can barely handle that as it is. There's nothing worse than having to deal with people who's main concern is about a conversation about where to EAT rather than the RIGHT-of-WAY. These peeps are going to get owned and I'm going to laugh. -7

does this mean cops will stop talking on their cell phones while driving??? I see that all the time

The problem is, if anyone else is in the car you can just say that they were talking on the phone and not the driver. Unless the cop actually sees you on the phone while you are driving, I can see a lot of these tickets being dismissed.

:irk: I'm pretty unthrilled about the hands free thing. It's going to be as much of a distraction to get the dumb hands free part ready as it is to just answer the phone and hold it while you drive.

Is this only for states in which talking on the phone while driving is illegal? Otherwise I don't see how CHP or cops could pull you over for talking on the phone, unless it's erratic/unsafe driving. And next year California drivers must have hands-free devices while driving.
