The PS4 Gets Its Own Virtual Reality Gaming Headset

Mar 19 2014 - 11:44am

Sony's new insane Matrix [1]-esque goggle/helmet Project Morpheus [2] (as in, the captain of Nebuchadnezzar. Coincidence? We think not.) promises to get your head in the game with 3D audio technology and a high-definition display mere inches from your eyeball.

The new virtual reality technology for the PlayStation 4 made its debut this week at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. It's a head-mounted unit with an HD 1080p LCD display that utilizes its own sensors, plus the PlayStation Camera, to track head movement. If that isn't enough, to further immerse gamers into the environment, Morpheus re-creates sounds from front, behind, left, front, and — get this — below and above its wearer. Choppers up ahead? You'll hear them. Someone chasing you from behind? You'll hear them, too.

And unlike the Oculus Rift VR technology, Sony's Morpheus can pair with the PlayStation Move, a handheld motion controller. The PS Move can be used as an object, like a lightsaber, so the gamer can physically wield a weapon and swashbuckle during gameplay.

We're not surprised that this technology is coming from Sony. The company's personal 3D viewer [3] has offered big-screen immersive media viewing for quite some time. Developers will be able to get their heads into the Morpheus to start developing for the platform soon. Sony plans to release an SDK, but consumers will have to wait a little longer — there's no release date set yet. Stay tuned for our hands-on with the device, and scroll down to check out our experience with another virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift, at the Game of Thrones exhibition below.
