Students Change Names On Facebook For Privacy

Students Getting Stealthy to Dodge Admissions Counselors

Amid privacy issues and concerns about who is really seeing your Facebook profile, it seems that among students, there's a popular new way to disguise yourself online — and it's a no-brainer. The New York Times is reporting that a large number of students are simply changing their profile names to dodge admissions counselors (or, presumably, anyone else checking out their Facebook profiles — like potential employers).

Most changes are fairly simple (i.e., Aim E. for Amy, or using only last initials in place of a last name), but are often enough to stay off the radar of anyone searching. And some students are getting even more creative with the changes, which according to one student are "not done as much for the sake for being functional, it's gotten more trendy."

Trendy or not, it's probably not a bad idea. Since we know 79 percent of employers search online profiles of potential new hires, what's to say college admissions counselors aren't doing the same? Have you (or someone you know) tried this?

changing your name on facebook doesn't make you "unsearchable" ..the most efficient way of finding someone on fb has always been to search them by their email. so, if the employer or admissions office has your email, and chances are they do, you will be found.

This type of "snooping" is exactly why I keep a personal profile and a professional profile. Professional being my name, personal a sudo. Then it's two fold, you're making it harder (not impossible) to locate your questionable activities and giving them something "good" to read. Guess it could also imply that you care about your appearance as well by keeping them separate.
