It's a sad day when your favorite superheroes can actually cause more harm than good. But that's the reality — for your computer at least, according to a new study called Most Toxic Superheroes released by McAfee today. Because superheroes are only getting more and more popular (we can thank box office successes like Iron Man), hackers are increasingly targeting sites devoted to superheroes with threats like viruses, spyware, phishing, and other malware.
So the next time you look up your favorite superhero online, know which terms and characters result in the greatest number of risky websites. As it turns out, the biggest offender is Aquaman (with an almost 19 percent chance of taking you to a sketchy zone of the Internet), especially when you type in phrases like “Aquaman and free torrent download” and “Aquaman and watch.”
The so-called toxic list includes the top 15 dangerous superheroes, and popular names like Mr. Fantastic, The Hulk, Wonder Woman, and Daredevil round out the top ones. The least harmful? Good ol' Spidey.
Computer threat or not, we're still cheering on our beloved superheroes, just being a bit more careful about it. And you can show those hackers who's boss by redeeming your favorites and voting in our very own superhero bracket!
