AT&T Sues Verizon over "There's a Map For That" Commercials

AT&T Sues Verizon Over a TV Commercial

Who didn't see this coming? AT&T is suing Verizon over their recent ad campaign, playing on Apple's iPhone catchphrase "There's an app for that," and laying into AT&T's supposed lack of coverage. According to AT&T, the side-by-side view of maps showing each network's 3G coverage areas is confusing to consumers, leading them to believe that there are large parts of the country where AT&T doesn't provide service.

I can see how the side-by-side view of the maps could be misleading, but Verizon isn't fudging any numbers. The maps in the commercial show 3G network coverage for both providers. The difference is, where there are holes in Verizon's maps there isn't coverage. On the AT&T map, much of the white areas not covered by 3G, AT&T's 2G network is offered. Apparently Verizon did add a disclaimer to the ad, but AT&T is still dissatisfied.

AT&T's main goal seems to be to get these commercials off the air. . . Do you think they have a case?

I think AT&T suing Verizon is ridiculous. The ads clearly state "3G Coverage". Verizon isn't doing anything wrong by just stating the facts.

I thought the ad was funny and AT&T is achieving what is probably the opposite intended effect with its lawsuit, because the commercial is now garnering way more attention than it might previously have received.

i think the commercials are a funny play on it, and they do say "3G coverage" in the commercial - they make it very clear, even if only to avoid lawsuits such as the one at&t is giving them.

at&t is being a bitch. lol. plain and simple. stop paying your lawyers and going after people, and spend that $ on improving your network. so that just in case the iphone doesn't go to other carriers by next year, i won't be scared to join at&t.

It says 3G is huge letters on the screen. No one said anything about 2G. AT&T needs to get over themselves.

I thought that add was cleaver with the "theres an app for that too". kind of sick of ATT & Apple boasting and tearing other people down. But when someone shoves it back in there face they get all pissy like a 5 year old boy. btw If I actually bought an apple based on those "I'm a mac" commercials I would be livid (as I am) about owning a mac. BTW nothing that came with my computer for free has been of any use. Viva Windows!

I second the wish that AT&T would spend their time figuring out how to get better service instead of bitching about competitive companies' ads.

The ad should stay as it is. I currently have an iPhone on AT&T and I'm in a nice chunk of 3G blue, but still have spotty service. At least once a day my 3G service drops to no service and then puts me on Edge for awhile. That DROID looks better and better each day. It would be different if the 3G maps were fakes. Suck it up AT&T and do something about your service instead of crying.

...and by "apple" I mean AT&T...I really shouldn't be putting my $.02 in at this time of the morning! :P

Well, it does say 3G Coverage quite large on the picture. And I'm right in the middle of that big white area on the apple map and there really is no apple service here so I have Verizon. I'm with KadBunny, they are just being bitter.

Aw I thought it was pretty funny and clever; they're just being bitter. :P But I'm biased, soo
