Twitter Etiquette, Keep Messages at 140 Characters or Less

Do You Follow Twitter Etiquette: 140 Characters or Less?

I've been following a bunch of celebs on Twitter to keep me in the know about what's going on in their lives, hoping for a little insight. But there was one celeb I started following that wasn't adhering to the 140 character premise of Twitter. Meaning they would max out one message, and then immediately begin another Tweet, and another until they finished what they wanted to say, which sometimes ended up being five tweets in a row.

Really, the whole idea of Twitter is to give the world a quick snapshot of what you're doing, what's going on, or what's floating around in your head. Personally, I think that if your message is longer than 140 characters, you should consider saving it for your blog.

Do you follow Twitter etiquette and keep your tweets to 140 characters or less, or are you guilty of stringing along multiple tweets to finish your message?

I HATE it when people go over 140 chars in a tweet and then continue what they were saying a few minutes later! I follow nearly 300 people and it's likely somebody has tweeted in between them! Very annoying.

99.9% of the time I stay within the 140 characters, but there's been a time or two when I went over a teensy bit :-)

Gosh - a lot of my tweets are one worders, like 5-7 characters...

Very rarely I add a 2nd msg, and only a 2nd, to finish an important tweet that just won't covert to txt spk. ;-)

I've gone over a few times, by accident. I text Twitter and sometimes forget that my text limit is 160 per page, so I just don't go over a page. Oops.

I rarely ever write more than a short sentence, and it is always under the 140 character limit. Anything longer than that, and it goes in my Livejournal. :) I don't use my twitter that often, though, so there ya go.

I have gone over but I usually stick to the 140. Rarely is anything so important I need to post multiple tweets about it.

I stick to the 140 characters usually, although I have gone over twice.

The 140 character limit is perfect. I can't stand it when people go over. Get a regular blog instead.

i do keep within the 140 char limitation. I have a blog that i can express my opinion and i just use twitter for a tiny update. no need to say more than what i'm thinking right now. it's a challenge also to try and express your thoughts with less words. less is more sometimes ;)

It is a challenge to keep to that length, but I find it fun and adhere. As Inspirata said, Twitter is much better when you actually go beyond the daylogging. I mostly follow people who are creative, funny or show some sort of insight on the way the world works with their tweets. I could care less about where anyone eats lunch. Some are even writing novels via Twitter.

I love the challenge of being concise! When in an email I would say "I am so frustrated at work right now because I can hear my coworker's headphones from down the hall!" .... in a tweet I would say "Dear coworker: Pls turn down headphones. kthx"

I definitely go over, but Twitter for me isn't just a 'status' thing - it's not just what I'm doing right now or what I'm thinking about; it's a means of communication to a whole lot of friends that I've made through Twitter. It's more than just a "This is what I'm doing" and that's it.
