Twitter's New Advertising Plan

Twitter Joins the Ad Revenue Party

Lots of big Twitter news this week! In the final days leading up to Chirp, its first ever official developers' conference, it's launched an official Blackberry app and acquired an iPhone app to make its own. Now comes another huge announcement: Twitter now has a plan to make money from ads. The program, called Promoted Tweets, will display when users search for certain words or terms purchased by advertisers. When a user searches for a specific word, advertiser-sponsored tweets will display at the top of the page, even if it's not the most recently posted tweet. Eventually, relevant advertisements will show up in users' Twitter streams.

This announcement comes less than a week after Apple announced iAds, its new ad platform for iPhone OS 4.0. Both services are aiming to serve only relevant ads that minimize disruption while users engage with content.
