Website of the Day: Cashto

When I was a teenager I got a job working at a cute boutique to make extra play money. While I was tempted by all the pretty dresses in the store, I became obsessed with weighing whether or not I wanted to purchase something against how long it would take me to earn that amount working. I may be all grown up and get paid a salary, but that doesn't mean I don't still wonder how much I make hourly or whether or not a new pair of shoes is worth it.

If you want to see how much you make while you are on the clock, check out Cashto, a site that calculates how much you make hourly, weekly, monthly and annually based on your salary. All you have to do is enter your payment amount, choose the time frame and the program calculates the money you make per day, per hour, per minute and per second. It's rewarding, depressing and interesting all rolled into one.

To learn how to post your favorite websites to our Website of the Day group,

Interesting - I think I make less per hour as a salaried full time employee than the student workers who get paid hourly - I might just take this little site to my boss... ;)

This site works well for some jobs, but is hopelessly wrong for many jobs in the financial, legal, and medical sectors. It assumes that a person works 8 hours a day, 246 days (49 weeks) a year. But people who work at investment banks, law firms, and hospitals often work twice as much as that without being paid overtime, because they work many more hours per day and also work many weekends. So, in short, this site didn't work for me. It overstated my daily and hourly earnings by nearly 100%.

Pardon the rant but I must get this off my chest. According to the website, after taxes I bring home about $14/hour. Considering I work with about 28 students/hour, I only make about $0.50 per student. If I see that one student once per day for 180 days (how long the school year is), that's only $90/student/year. If my math/logic is flawed, someone please let me know. Now, I had another teacher tell me that a parent yelled at her once upon a time and said that she should give his child special treatment because he paid her salary. No, sir, you're technically only paying her $90 for 180+ hours of spending time with your child. That's a steal! What other service can you receive for that amount of time and money. Sorry about the post. I think I've had a bad week.
