iPad Screen Lock Changing to Mute Switch

iPad's Screen Lock Will Change to Mute Switch With iOS 4.0.2

If you've been using your iPad's orientation lock regularly, it's time to start weaning yourself from it. After updating to iOS 4.0.2, the toggle will become a mute switch instead. When the iPad was first announced, the switch was intended to mute your tablet (similar to the iPhone's), but when the iPad was released in March, the switch functioned as a lock to maintain the orientation of content no matter which direction you turned it.

Since the change in function will completely take away the option to lock the iPad's screen, some wondered if users would be given the chance to choose between two options. Not so, according to Steve Jobs via an email response to an iPad user.

I've been using iPad 4.2 for a few weeks, and I really miss the orientation switch (which is funny, because at first I found it annoying and thought I needed the mute more). To access the switch now, you swipe over to the iPod controls under multitasking. It's an extra step or two.

I use the orientation lock quite a bit, I don't on the other hand mute my ipad that often. I have been concidering not getting the software upgrade when it comes 'cause I like how my ipad works the way it is.
