The iPhone 3G S Launch in San Francisco

iPhone 3G S Launch: Mild Compared to Last Year

If any of you were around for the iPhone launch in 2007 and the iPhone 3G launch last year, you're probably noticing that the hoopla surrounding this year's launch isn't as crazy as previous years. Before AT&T opened its doors this morning, there were a few people lingering about, but nothing to the effect of lawn chairs, a beverage cooler, and blankets. Here are some pics of what the scene looked like outside San Francisco's Apple store this morning — a decent, civilized line — without any hardcore overnighters. I know most of you are pretty excited about the iPhone 3G S, so taking into consideration the state of the economy and the fact that you could pre-order the device online, do you think this is why the lineups are smaller than the past two years?

I would be the same as you jaclyn86, but I didn't have an iPhone before. So I figured this time would be the best to get one.Did you update the software package for your current phone already?

I have an iPhone 3G and I'm able to get most of the new features of the iPhone 3GS with just the software update. Although it would be cool to have a better phone and a compass, the software update is good enough for me!

I thought that would be crazy lines at the store so I ordered my new iPhone on-line and it arrived on Friday!

Oh and I am thrilled that my Blackberry/Verizon contract is up in 3 months; iPhone is the way to go and I will FINALLY be able to have one.

While many sites report how mild the lines were/are, few are mentioning how the sales look to be exceeding that of the last, iPhone 3G. And how there is a possibility of surpassing the original iPhone sales. People thought ahead this time and the phone has been pre-ordered like crazy. So with that in mind, there would not be a need to have majorly insane lines.

I preordered my new iPhone last week at ATT so I just went after work to pick it up yesterday. There were a fair number of people walking in and asking if there were any available (they'd sold out that morning) but most of the people showing up were picking up their preorders. It all seemed pretty tame to me. Although the staff at the store assured me that it had been crazier that morning.

oh, and just to add another one... I think there are so many choices in smartphones now. so not everyone wants/needs an iphone.

Totally laid back in my town. I went into AT&T to find out the logistics for today, and because of last years chaos, they told me to line up early, even though I had preordered and gotten my delivery email. So, I headed downtown at 6:15, figuring I'd be there for several hours (parked about 7 blocks away to avoid the 2 hour zones), and I was the 4th in line. After we split out the preorders from the non-preorders, I was the first preorder in line! I was out of AT&T by 7:30 :) All in all, when I left there were about 10 more preorderers in line, and half a dozen non-preorders. The store was anticipating opening WAY earlier to the non-preorderers than 10.

1. It's not *that* big of an upgrade. Many people don't want to spend that much extra money for a new phone when they can get the software upgrade. 2. A LOT of people have just gotten around to buying iPhones anyway, so there's no point in getting something even newer. 3. The economy. Things are expensive enough as it is, don't spend money when you don't need to. 4. It's still with AT&T. It's the number one reason I've heard for low numbers of NEW iPhone customers vs. upgrade customers. I know I won't even consider getting one until it opens on other carriers. 5. It's the summer. Who wants to wake up that early/camp out unless they KNOW there's not going to be a very limited amount? 6. Isn't there supposed to be a new iPhone with different styling and such next year, anyway? If you just got one, it'd make more sense to wait to either buy the 3GS at a discount or pay more for the completely different one.
