Half Dome Is the Ultimate Day Hike For the Most Extreme Adventurers

Jun 21 2017 - 1:31pm

Half Dome [1] is a gigantic granite dome 8,800 feet above sea level at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, CA [2]. It is an extensive 12-mile hike full of spectacular waterfalls, bustling wildlife, and a knee-knocking cable climb that will test your courage, perseverance, and the true strength of your toenails.

The hike to the base is perfect for beginning to intermediate hikers, but only those with advanced knowledge of climbing should pass. The most famous (or infamous) part of the hike is the ascent up the cables [3]. Two metal cables allow hikers to climb the last 400 feet to the summit without rock-climbing equipment. (Although we do suggest bringing your own carabiners for extra safety.)

But, once at the top, hikers have a sweeping panoramic view of the Yosemite Valley below. Mirror Lake shines across the lush forest floor in the Summer months, and the sequoia trees still look larger than life from above. The experience is a surreal one, with scenery that will be locked away in your cherished memory forever. An Instagram won't even do the breathtaking view justice.
