You Can Explore (and Camp in) the Creepy, Abandoned Set From This Tim Burton Film

In Tim Burton's Big Fish, the fictional town of Spectre, AL, is portrayed as a blue-skied, sleepy community where, astonishingly, nobody wears shoes. "I agreed to spend the afternoon, if only to understand the mystery of how a place could feel so strange and yet so familiar," describes protagonist Ed Bloom of the southern town, where he finds love and unravels the mysteries of his life. And you can find out if Spectre feels strange yet familiar to you, too, because the now-abandoned set of the fantastical film was never torn down.

Located near Montgomery, AL, the hauntingly gorgeous town of Spectre sits on a large island property wherein visitors can explore, camp, and get in touch with their inner big fish for a nominal fee of $3 (and permission from the owners, of course). One Tumblr user detailed instructions for reaching the set on her blog, so if you ever find yourself near Montgomery, you won't have to travel through a haunted forest to see Spectre.

Check out these gorgeous photos of the abandoned set to plan your trip, and remember . . . don't pack shoes!

"You don't wear shoes in Spectre."

Signs point to the abandoned Spectre set, showing explorers where to walk.

At the center of "town" is a church, which has grown dilapidated over the years.

Countless visitors have thrown shoes over Spectre's fake telephone line as a tribute to the film.

While many of the set buildings are unsafe to explore inside, visitors often peek around.

"The grass so green, skies so blue; Spectre is really great!"

Because the set is not maintained, visit sooner rather than later — over a decade of disuse has taken its toll on Spectre!

The buildings are so hauntingly beautiful, you'll believe it's a real ghost town.

"Now, it's common knowledge that most towns of a certain size have a witch."

Some visitors stop by at night to up the creepy factor.

If you choose to enter the buildings in Spectre despite posted warnings, be careful!

"This town is more than any man could ask for. And if I were to end up here, I'd consider myself lucky."

Oh, did we mention a herd of goats likes to wander around town?
