The $16 Lifesaver I Packed For a Weekend on Fire Island — Plus 9 Other Essentials

Jun 16 2025 - 12:41pm

I've always heard great things about Fire Island but somehow hadn't made it there in all six years of living in NYC. It probably would've taken me years to get there if it hadn't been for a close friend's wedding.

I didn't know much about the island until we hopped on a train and a ferry (there are no cars on the island) and made our way to Ocean Bay Park — a charming, laid-back community that feels a world away from the city. The moment we hopped off the ferry, I fell in love with the tiny wooden houses, sand-covered paths (in lieu of busy roads) and peaceful, non-industrial feeling. There were no headlights or busy intersections, just the sound of the waves and people talking in the background. It felt a bit like Montauk [1] 10 to 15 years ago, before the $50 lobster rolls and overpriced drinks took over the scene.

Getting around was a whole experience in itself, with golf carts and bikes being the preferred modes of transportation. There's a rich LGBTQIA+ [2] history on Fire Island, especially in nearby towns like Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines — places that have been refuges and getaways for generations. They are among the oldest queer community sites in the country, serving as safe harbors for a marginalized group seeking acceptance and dignity long before the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

Best Times to Visit Fire Island

Fire Island is pretty great at any time, but the weather is best from late spring through early fall (think May to September). Summers, especially July and August, get lively with lots of people and events, which is perfect if you don't mind a busier scene. But if you want something quieter, late May, early June, and September see fewer crowds.

Where to Stay on Fire Island

Besides Ocean Bay Park, you can also stay in Ocean Beach if you're looking for a bit more action. It's about a 30 minute walk from Ocean Bay Park and has plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops. And if you're into a livelier atmosphere, Cherry Grove and The Pines are well-known for LGBTQIA+ nightlife and upbeat vibes.

Places to stay range from cozy Airbnbs to small inns. Since there are no cars on the island, staying close to the ferry and where you want to hang out makes getting around easier. Heads up — the island is pretty small, so options are limited and fill up fast in the summer. Booking early is definitely a smart move.

Fire Island is the perfect spot to celebrate with friends, appreciate nature, and disconnect from hectic city life — all while perfecting your vacation style. Keep scrolling for everything I personally packed (and loved) for a weekend getaway on Fire Island, from wedding guest dresses [3] and comfortable heels [4] to colorful bags and travel essentials [5] that made all the difference.

Hydration Packets

Liquid I.V. Sugar Free Peach [6] ($16)

Liquid I.V. is my go-to for every wedding weekend — especially since I tend to leave my water bottle [7] back at home. Walking around dehydrated and drinking more than I normally would adds up to a horrible hangover, so these packs really help me stay on track. They contain electrolytes and come in a ton of flavors – like peach, lemon lime, pear, and strawberry. They're kind of like Gatorade in a small packet and are perfect for staying hydrated on the go.

Evening Bag

Jambhala Store Elegant Evening Purse [8] ($24)

I love fun and colorful bags, and this one is perfect for Fire Island as it embodies the vibrant energy of the nightlife there. The hot pink color adds the perfect pop to any outfit, and it's big enough to hold all the essentials — phone, lip gloss, keys, wallet, and a few extras. Plus, it can be worn as a clutch or with the detachable chain for a hands-free option. Surprisingly, it's also under $25!

Face Mist

Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray [9] ($28)

This facial spray is my go-to, not just for wedding weekends, but honestly every single day. I use it after workouts, when I'm feeling a bit overheated, or even as a primer before putting on makeup. Read our Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray review [10] for more.

Editor Quote: "It's hard to comprehend the hype around something as simple as a spray — until you try this one from Tower 28. Many of your standard mists on the market boast hydrating qualities and have a nice cooling effect, but that's it." – Jessica Harrington, senior editor, Beauty

White Tee

Nordstrom Pima Cotton Blend Crewneck T-Shirt [11] ($35)

I always pack a simple white tee with me no matter where I'm going, as you can make a white tee work for any occasion. If you're having a hard time finding the perfect one, whether it's for traveling or everyday wear, you need to try this one from Nordstrom.

Lip Gloss

Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Lip Plumping Gloss [12] ($40)

The lip plumper craze might be over, but the hype is still very real. This gloss is one of my favorites – it smells great, adds the perfect finishing touch, and it's my go-to for events or nights out. I like to start with a lip liner [13], then apply Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Plumping Gloss [14] ($27), and layer this on top for that perfect, polished look.

Vinyl Heels

Zara High Heeled Vinyl Sandals [15] ($60)

I've been seeing vinyl heels everywhere lately, some more appealing than others, but most were way too expensive for me to justify buying — especially when I wasn't sure how comfortable the vinyl strap would be. But these have been a lifesaver. They're comfortable, minimalist, and definitely turn heads. I wore them all weekend on Fire Island without needing a single Band-Aid or feeling the urge to take them off.

Sweatsuit

Maison des Nus Signature Red Crewneck [16] ($67)

When I'm traveling for a weekend getaway, I love wearing sets — they're comfortable but still look put together. This set has become my go-to. The fleece cotton crewneck features drop shoulders and a slightly cropped fit, perfectly teamed with the Maison des Nus Signature Red Shorts [17] ($62). Plus, red is my favorite color, and this set has the perfect shade. I've washed it countless times with no dye bleeding or change in fit — a huge win for a piece I reach for again and again.

Breezy Midi Dress

Zara Jacquard Midi Dress [18] ($80)

Being a wedding guest [19] can get expensive, so whenever I can avoid spending a ton on dresses, I'm all for it. This breezy dress option from Zara is perfect for achieving formal beach attire. The best part? The dress is such a cute color, you don't need a shawl, and it's comfortable enough to eat and dance in all night. Plus, it's under $100.

Blow Dryer Brush

amika Hair Blow Dryer Brush 2.0 [20] ($100)

This hair tool has become one of my favorites, whether I'm getting ready for a wedding or just a regular day. It's very similar to the viral Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer [21] and super easy to use without damaging your hair. I like to spray the Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray [22] to help keep my strands smooth and frizz-free while styling.

Carry-On Bag

Away The Carry-On [23] ($275)

I've had my Away bag for years now, and it's still the best carry-on [24]. Honestly, I haven't used any other bag since I got it as a gift from my boyfriend. It fits a surprising amount and for our weekend trip to Fire Island, we even shared it. It's lightweight, the wheels rotate 360 degrees for a smooth roll, and it's reasonably priced for a bag that's going to last. Read our editor's Away Carry-On review [25] for more.
