How many eyeliners does it take to make the perfect date-night look? According to Beauty.com makeup artist Romy Soleimani, the answer is three. This Fashion Week, she used a trio of liners to create this gorgeous rimmed eye makeup for the Milly runway. Now you have an excuse to stock your kit with an inky waterproof pencil, a kohl eyeliner, and a liquid liner pen. Each one is essential to creating a long-wear makeup look that has a retro feel without being overdone. Plus, it's the perfect date-night alternative to the smoky eye! Keep reading to get a step-by-step tutorial on how to layer liners like a pro.
First dust eyelids with a mix of Kevyn Aucoin Matte Eyeshadow ($30) in shades 108 (a dusty mauve) and 109 (a deep merlot). The color should start with the lighter shade in the inner corners and ombré out to the darker purple. "It's the color of skin in a way, you know, when you get tired and you have that purplish skin, but we don't want it to feel too '80s," Soleimani said.
To get a perfectly defined eye, Soleimani layered three different eyeliner formulas. At home, start with a waterproof product in the upper and lower waterline. Then, use a classic pencil liner like Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Prematif ($26) in Basic Black around the top and bottom lash line.
Go over the pencil on the top lash line with the Kevyn Aucoin The Precision Liquid Liner ($34). The finished look should have a very slight winged shape. "It's a sexy little cat done in a really subtle way," Soleimani explained.
Brush on a coat of Kevyn Aucoin Curling Mascara ($28) to the top and bottom lashes after defining eyes with a lash curler.
Highlight the cheekbones with a bit of Kevyn Aucoin Lip Gloss ($30) in Beaugonia, a pearl mauve shade. Apply the same shade to an eye shadow brush, and place in the inner corners of the eye, too. For the Milly runway, Soleimani completed the look with just a dash of lip balm on the mouth.
